Monday

  • I had been read through the AutoCAD drawing for water reticulation, highway and bridge.
  • The purpose is to gain basic understanding in software (AutoCAD) as well as those system mentioned above.
  • For example, the location of butterfly valve, air valve, scour valve, MSCL pipes and other components.
  • Manager had asked me to check on the grammatical errors in meeting minute.
  • The meeting minute was submitted via Wechat which is most commonly used among CGPV workers.

Tuesday

  • In the morning, I met with Dr. Chen Ai Lu who are the director of Resource Management Division. He was absent last week due to leave.
  • Dr. Chen gave the all the interns a briefing and some advices in this division.
  • He wished that we can promptly ask any question and take initiatives by requesting daily tasks from our individual supervisor. He also emphasized on the importance of having good working attitude such as willing to learn and proactive behaviour.
  • After that, I went to site nearby Golf Hotel, led by an experience M & E engineer (also vice manager) called Mr. Su.
  • He brought us to look around the construction site which is still at initial stage, without digging the slot for water supply pipes and high-voltage cable.
  • I had learnt that it is common sense to put all the pipes circling the construction site as the centre part is for property use. This is to ease the construction of property without interrupting water reticulation and electric network.
  • Besides, there are chances that the water pipes will break due to the heavy weight above them such as property or truck.
  • Since the whole land of forest city is created by land reclamation, it's important to not have too much soil & sand above pipe. Therefore, electric cables should be buried deeper than water system.
  • This can also ease the maintenance and repair service in case of occurrence of pipe leakage or crack.
  • In the evening, I was assigned with the task to type two letters to contractors (Khidmat Hijau Sdn Bhd and Bras Ventures Berhad) regarding commencement order of location amendment for DN450 water pipe works and11kV electric cable respectively. Both letters have reference to the contract agreeement and the construction is based on work scope written in contract clauses.

Wednesday

  • In the morning, colleague had sent interns a file on the job scope of department and division.
  • This helps me understands better the job scope of Municipal Division and Resource Management Department.
  • I had received Mr. Su's presentation slides about briefing of work progress.
  • There will be a meeting from 3 divisions (Municipal, Highway & Bridge and Palace Project) every week.
  • Presentation from engineer on the progress of project is required.
  • I had assisted Mr. Su to correct the project completion date and plot number in 'Milestone Plan of Resource - Municipal' using Excel file.
  • For the evening session, most of the time had been spent in site visit led by Mr. Su.
  • The focus was on inspection and supervision on the progress of PTP street lights installation. PTP refers to street lights located along highway towards the direction of Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP).
  • I also accompanied Mr. Su to check the Golf Hotel water pipelines system. He found out that the pressure gauge reading was abnormal, which is higher than usual reading of ~ 7 atm.
  • Action was taken to solve this problem. Manager of Golf Hotel had been contacted to ask relative authority to do a checking.
  • Since there was still time, I spent it by practising AutoCAD.

Thursday

  • After 9 am, some interns and I went for a site visit with Engineer Mr. Su.
  • First, we went to construction site Plot 4, Plot 5, Plot 26. Mr. Su showed us the location of buried temporary pipelines for electricity and water.
  • The, inspection on the PTP street lights was carried out.
  • Mr. Su brought us to see the difference between difference in quality of paints on those street lights, by comparing the baked paint and ordinary paint. Baked paint has lighter&brighter surface meanwhile ordinary paint is darker and more dull. Baked paint is more expensive and has higher quality.
  • We went to the construction site nearby Golf Hotel, finding out that the land surveyor had not taken the measurement yet.
  • Therefore, a call had been made. Upon his arrival, equipment was used to take the measurement, indicating the red line which is the border line of this site.
  • Several spots along the red line were marked using wood stick.

Friday

  • In the morning, we paid another visit to site nearby Golf Hotel because of the delay in pipe installation.
  • This pipeline project is handled by Khidmat Hijau Sdn Bhd, multiple times of work fines had been issued to this contractor.
  • The amount of fines is determined by engineer in charge which is Mr. Su, depending on the seriousness of progress delay.
  • Instruction and explanation had been given to the foreman at construction site to clarify the situation.
  • At there, I had noticed that there are signs of sand liquefaction. It appears as a bottle-shaped hole with seawater inside. I seeked for Mr. Su advices on land reclamation, wetlands and sand liquefaction.
  • Land reclamation (or land fill) is the process of creating new land from ocean, riverbeds or lake beds.
  • A wetland is a land area saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally, with characteristic vegetation of aquatic plants such as mangrove swamps. In Forest City, it takes 6 to 12 months for the sand&soil to sink slowly, creating a firmer foundation for road or property. Wetland is suitable for site of land fill and Forest City is built on mangrove swamps in coastal area.
  • Sand liquefaction (or soil liquefaction) is a phenomenom whereby a saturated or partially saturated soil substantially loses its strength and stiffness in response to applied stress. Sudden change in stress condition (earthquake etc) causes it to behave like liquid.
  • In the afternoon, checking and inspection on replacement of water pressure meter had been done. Previously we had found out abnormal reading, this is probably due to malfunction of instrument.

Saturday

  • There was a meeting from 9am to 12pm among Municipal, Highway & Bridge, Palace Project and Resource Divisions.
  • This meeting was held at Engineering & Technology Department Conference Room.
  • The attendance is compulsory for all, including interns.
  • This meeting was started with the briefing of Dr. K.K. Ng, entitled Forest City Sewage Station Planning. This is to share information on construction planning, sewage target, and operational mode.
  • For 4 islands, there will be total of 18 Sewage Treatment Plants (STP). Building of first three STP will cost more than 1 hundred million.
  • Dr. K.K. also shared that there are four options of technology in STP, which are Extended Aeration (EA), Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) and SJTU.BioSTS.
  • Each method has its pros and cons. EA is traditional and outdated, MBR is new technology, SBR is mostly for industrial use and lastly SJTU BioSTS refers to technology developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
  • The meeting was continued with progress presentation from each division (Highway & Bridge, Municipal etc).
  • Director of this department, Dr. Chen Ai Lu also spoke out his mind during gap for each presentation. There were total 6 main points, including task assignment for interns, executive ability, planning & directionality, construction & management, strengthening of internal communication and importance of paperwork.
  • Today's work was from 9am to 12pm.
