About Me

Hi there! My name is Yasmeen Natasha Binti Hafiz Shahrel. You can call me Yasmeen. I am a student at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, pursuing a degree in Data Engineering. I grew up in Shah Alam and I have loving parents and siblings that have supported me in everything I do. The reason why I chose to study Data Engineering is because of my dream of becoming a Data Scientist in the near future. Plus, I have always enjoyed learning Computer Science ever since the subject was introduced to me when I was in secondary school. Another passion of mine is music.

I really hope I can contribute to something useful in the future with the knowledge that I gained during my studies in this prestigious university. I will continue to learn and strive to become a better version of myself.

I will be using my e-Portfolio as a platform for me to share my achievements and reflections on different things that I have learned. I hope we can get along well!

AWS Reflections

  1. A summary of what I have gained from completing the course (get a
    badge)

As I sit down to reflect on my journey of getting the AWS badge, I find that it was a valuable opportunity for me to learn more about cloud computing concepts and AWS. There are so many things that I have gained from completing this course. By completing all of the 10 modules provided, I can now say that I have more in-depth knowledge on cloud concepts, cloud economics and billing, AWS Global Infrastructure, AWS cloud security, networking and content delivery, compute, storage, databases, cloud architecture, and automatic scaling and monitoring. I am now able to define the AWS Cloud and explain the AWS Cloud architectural principles.

  1. My motivation to complete this project?

To be very honest, my main motivation of completing this project is to get the AWS badge. I believe that my perseverance of completing all of the modules will pay off. Plus, I can say that I had fun learning as most of the things taught are new to me and the topics are kinda interesting.

  1. My opinion whether getting the badge is easy or difficult? Which module is the easiest/most difficult?

Personally, I feel like getting the badge is somewhat easy. However, there are some modules that are way harder to understand than the others. For me, I feel like the easiest module is the first module as it mainly focuses on the introduction to cloud computing. The hardest module for me to understand was probably Module 5 as it is confusing.

  1. What’s a badge worth?

One might ask, what is the value of a badge? I believe that the value is subjective and it is different for everyone. For me, this AWS badge specifically is really valuable as it has opened my doors for me to be able to gain more knowledge on the subject that I love to learn.

  1. Feedback whether getting the badge improved my knowledge and skills
    on Cloud Computing

Getting the AWS badge has definitely improved my knowledge and skills on Cloud Computing. It has given me valuable lessons on how Cloud Computing works. Prior to getting the badge, I barely have the knowledge on AWS and Cloud Computing but after completing the course, I have better understanding and skills necessary for me work in the industry.

  1. My opinion whether every company should shift to Cloud Computing?

Honestly, I don’t think I have enough knowledge and experience to give an opinion on that. But, I think maybe if every company shifts to Cloud Computing, it can be of benefit to the companies. By investing in Cloud Computing, companies will have modern business advantages that include a more reliable disaster recovery and backup solutions.

  1. My opinion whether every computer science/UTM student should learn
Cloud Computing (get the AWS badge?)

In my opinion, every UTM student whether they are taking computer science courses or not should learn Cloud Computing and get the AWS badge. The reason why I think even non computer science students should join this academy is because the modules are really easy to learn. I believe everyone would be able to easily follow the teaching videos and complete all of the lab exercises and knowledge check.

  1. Any advice to my friends who have not get the AWS badge yet?

My advice to my friends who have not get the AWS badge yet is to set aside some of your precious time for this course. I can assure you that it will not be a waste of time and you will definitely learn a lot. Trust me.

  1. What is my direction after completing the badge?

My answer to this question is that I just hope I can get myself involved in projects that will allow me to use my Cloud Computing skills. I like to go out of my comfort zone and try new things because I believe that these are the only ways for me to grow and build confidence.

  1. My opinion about getting the AWS badge that is included in SECP1513
    subject

Well, I am really grateful that getting the AWS badge is included in SECP1513 subject because it has pushed me to learn about AWS and Cloud Computing. Otherwise, I don’t think I would make the time to do so.

AWS Journey

I have successfully completed my journey of getting an AWS badge this early January. I started around mid December last year and it took me around 2 weeks to complete all of the modules. In order for me to get the badge, I have to complete 10 modules provided by watching videos, doing some lab exercises, and finishing each modules with a knowledge check. For every knowledge check, I need to get at least 80% in order for me to move on to the next module. Before starting my journey, I did know really know much about AWS and had little knowledge of cloud computing concepts. Basically, this course covers 10 topics namely Cloud concepts, Cloud economics and billing, AWS Global Infrastructure, AWS Cloud security, Networking and content delivery, Compute, Storage, Databases, Cloud architecture, and Automatic scaling and monitoring.

I will try to give an overview of what I learned in each module. In Module 1 (Cloud concepts), I have been introduced to cloud computing and Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as the advantages of cloud computing. The first module concludes with the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (AWS CAF). In Module 2 (Cloud Economics and Billing), I learned mainly about the benefits of moving to the cloud. Moving on to Module 3 (AWS Global Infrastructure), I was given the overview of the AWS global infrastructure that includes the regions, availability zones, network infrastructure, and points of presence. I also learned about AWS service categories. This module concludes with an AWS Management Console activity. In Module 4 (AWS Cloud Security), I got to learn about AWS approach to security.

The main thing I learned in Module 5 (Networking and Content Delivery) is the primary of AWS networking and content delivery services that includes Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), Amazon Route 53, and Amazon CloudFront. Next, in Module 6 (Compute),  I was introduced to many of the compute services offered by AWS. Other than that, there are many options for storing data with AWS that I learned in Module 7 (Storage). In Module 8 (Databases) I have been provided with an overview of the most popular AWS database services, with an emphasis on differentiating which database service to utilise for particular use scenarios. Module 9 (Cloud Architecture) has provided me with the designing and building cloud architectures. Last but not least, in Module 10 (Automatic Scaling and Monitoring), I learned about the three primary AWS services that can be used together to build architectures.

Here I provide an image of how the badge looks like:

Data visualization is a way of how information can be represented. It is important to first understand the several types of data that can be visualized and also their relationships to each other. The types of data include quantitative, discrete, continuous, and categorical data. There are several types of data relationships such as nominal comparison, time series, correlation, ranking, deviation, distribution, and part-to-whole relationship. The 6 types of charts include bar chart, pie chart, line chart, scatterplot chart, bubble chart, and heat map variations. Microsoft Power BI is one of the software that can be used to visualize data. It is a user-friendly software that has the flexibility to transform data. Power BI desktop app can be used to generate reports. For publishing the reports, we can use Power BI Services (Software as a Service – SaaS). Power BI mobile app is used to view the reports and dashboards. Overall, this talk has exposed us to the commonly used data visualization software in the industry, that is the Microsoft Power BI.

Acknowledgement for my lecturer

I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation towards my lecturer, Dr. Izyan Izzati for your valuable guidance throughout this whole semester. I am so thankful to have Dr. Izyan as my lecturer because she has been very helpful and she always makes sure that we understand the topics discussed in class.

Even though there were lots of assignment that were assigned to us, we were able to finish our tasks well with Dr. Izyan's guidance. The topics that we learned in class was also taught by Dr. Izyan in detail and we were able to gain better understanding of the topics, compared to when we first enter the semester.

I would also like to thank Dr. Izyan for giving your full effort in guiding me and my team during the completion of our project.

My opinion on whether this subject contributes to my knowledge on specific area?

In my opinion, this subject has definitely contributed to my knowledge on information systems and technology, as well as the emerging trends of IT. During the beginning of the semester, I have learned how to distinguish the components of information systems and technology.

Throughout the semester, I have attended several industrial talks on different topics related to this subject. The talks were given by many successful people working in the industry. They have shared their insights on the industry and have also generously shared their experiences and gave some useful advices to us.

The assignments that were assigned to us have also helped me improve my understanding of information systems and technology. For example, at the beginning of the semester, I barely have the knowledge of cloud computing but after finishing my assignments and attending talks as well as completing my AWS course, I can confidently say that I have way better understanding than before.

All in all, this subject is essential in order for me to pursue my dream working in the tech industry.

What is the action/improvement/plan necessary for me to improve my potential in the industry?

I believe that I need to put a lot of work into improving my potential in the industry.

First of all, I need to be clear of my goals. I feel like the more precise my goals are, the more easier it is for me to achieve them.

I will also need to improve my quality of work and to do that, I will have to push myself to learn new things everyday as knowledge is the key to everything. Attending industrial talks is one of the great ways for me to expand my knowledge on the industry.

Surrounding myself with people who have had experiences in the industry is also crucial in order for me to improve myself. Hearing their advices will help me become more aware of what I need to work on more.

What is my goal/dream concerning my course/program?

As a Data Engineering student, my goal is of course to work in a big company where I can live my dream as a Data Scientist. The reason why I chose this as my career goal is because of my interest in Computer Science and also I believe that there will be huge opportunities available.

As for my short-term goal, I am just hoping I can pass my first semester with flying colours. I am currently working on completing all of my assignments and studying for final exams.

I will try my best to overcome any challenges during my study journey so that I can successfully graduate with a degree in Data Engineering.
