Completing Research on evening activities(PSDA project)
It was an awkward time for me doing this but overall I believe I did it the way it was meant to be done. It all started when the teacher gave us the project at the start of the semester when we first formed teams. The objective seems simple enough, collect data and interpret it. I first have al these ideas about what type of information I could interpret, like game scores, geological phenomenon and even environmental pollution indexes. But as I learned more about this subject and discussed it with my team members, I realized I need to decrease my scope and be more realistic. And thus, we settled on evening activities among UTM students. It was then tweaked to be more sports-focused and thus we get started on our project.
We got started with the collection of data. The most popular ways of doing it are through an online survey. We all worked together to create and write the appropriate questions and use the appropriate language for the survey. We then ask our Lecturer to review the questions we presented. I have learned that each question gives a very unique data point that can be manipulated to find out very interesting things. I also learned that the language we use can produce very different responses and thus, it is important to say the right thing to get what you want.
After a few weeks, we finally have enough data to start sorting it into appropriate graphs and figures. This is about the time when the virus "COVID-19" started putting the country in panic mode and thus we were rightly quarantined in our houses. This threw all our schedules into the bin and thus we were in the dark for 2 weeks on how our education will proceed with the situation. The coordinators gave statements and the lecturers did everything they can to adapt and it all worked out fine. We can no longer meet in person but with technology, we were able to learn and continue with a modified version of our syllabus.
2 of our group member were task to put the data in graphs and another team member and I was task with interpreting it and discussing each and every data point. I found out during this process that data is absolutely meaningless unless humans are able to make sense of it. Having coming to grow over age while something decrease over time means nothing without the proper context and outside knowledge on the current situation making it more clear. I was glad that we collected the data before the quarantine because we won't be able to collect the data otherwise and it would all amount to zero if so.
The video making portion of this project was the simplest. I was task with the intro since my English was the best within our group. Just talk in front of the camera and sent it toward one of our group members in charge of editing. It is difficult for us to help with this part because of the quarantined but all of us helped a little bit like my writing is the basis for the script for the video. It was sometimes frustrating doing more than one take for a segment, way different from presenting to a class because we were able to interact with the crowd but this time I could see all the tiny mistakes I did and wished to make another take which was frustrating.
In the end, I actually have fun with this project. It showed me the versatility and power of data, and how it can be a very useful tool in decision making along with the trial and tribulations of conducting such a project. Hopefully the next time I need to conduct a similar project for work, school or for fun (yes for fun, I want to use the techniques to calculate "League of Legends" Player data), I would be better equipped and experienced doing so.
