Event Description
The event is conducted to provide awareness of the importance of sign language in our daily life. There are various activities are being conducted such as the introduction to alphabetical and numerical sign symbols alongside shortcuts signs that are normally used during conversation. The event was held for around 1 hour and 30 minutes as we manage to get the speaker's insight into how she handles OKU people at school and other institutions. The participants then manage to get an e-module containing sign languages that we have learned after the event finishes.
Graduate Attributes
Thinking Skills
Sign language is very tough to be learned at first because I need to change the symbols quickly during the conversation. I improve my thinking skills by practicing sign language during my free time. The event also provided tips and tricks on how to remember the signs better as I apply them during my practice session. Hence, my responsiveness towards sign-changing when communicating has been better ever since.
Communication Skills
Learning a new language is certainly entertaining since I am able to widen my knowledge in the world of languages. I am also able to communicate with deaf and mute people more effectively considering I have known some of them in my family tree. It also depicts my awareness of how sign language can make difference as I can be the bridge between normal and abnormal communities.
Self-reflection
What I learn from participating in the event is it provided me the opportunity to teach how to communicate in sign language. Speaker during the event also stated they are shorthanded of sign language teachers as she seeks for volunteers to help her. From there, I could work part-time and take my chance voluntering on teaching people sign language. Moreover, I manage to know new people during the event despite it being online. For instance, the event contains a breakout session activity where the participants are divided randomly by an instructor. We are required to implement things that we learn and try to communicate with sign language. I am able to understand and get to the messages delivered as it improves my communication skills. Overall, my satisfaction towards this event is fulfilled and provided me with the need to continuously learn sign language for my own benefit and others.
