SHANTHI'S REFLECTION ON THERMODYNAMICS GROUP PRESENTATION
RSS
ON 1ST OF JUNE 2018 WE DID OUR FIRST GROUP PRESENTATION FOR THERMODYNAMICS.THE GIVEN TOPIC IS SECOND LAW ASPECTS IN DAILY LIFE.SO IN THIS CASE WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE SECOND LAW AND ALSO THE APPLICATION RELATED TO THE SECOND LAW FOR EXAMPLE LIKE AIR CONDITIONER.MY GROUP CONSIST OF 5 MEMBERS.WE DIVIDE THE TASK EQUALLY IN ORDER TO DO THE PRESENTATION SUCCESSFULLY.WE HAVE LEARNT ALOT FROM THE PRESENTATION FOR EXAMPLE LIKE COMMITMENT AMONG GROUP MEMBERS,TEAM WORK,RESPONSIBILITY OF A TEAM LEADER,PUNCTUALITY AND SO ON.BELOW I ATTACHED SOME OF THE PICTURES TAKEN DURING THE PRESENTATION AND I ALSO ATTACHED OUR SLIDES :
- I found that making this academic presentation to be a very challenging experience. This was mainly down to working with a group of people that I don't know.Despite how challenging I thought the experience was I also found that working on, and presenting the presentation to be a rewarding experience, this was because I was able use theories I had learned and apply them to a specific area.
- All the theories that I used during my presentation had been taught in the lecture, nevertheless I found that by doing my own personal reading and internet research it helped me fully understand these theories and then be able to apply them during the presentation.
- During my presentation I felt that my presentation skills could have been better, this was maybe because it was the first presentation I had to do at university for this thermodynamics subject.
- I felt this presentation helped me because I was able to improve on my weakness which I had which was my presentation skills and this allowed me to improve this in a later presentation I did for another module. So reflecting on my experience of this presentation allowed me to improve 'the capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continuous learning'.
- This experience also showed that I was able to complete my research and gather information and deliver it in a presentation which was a new thing for me. At first I didn't feel confidence that I would be able to deliver a good piece of work, but by working with others it has shown me that if you all work together on a piece of work it doesn't seem as daunting and it will make the experience more rewarding.
INTERNSHIP AT SM BIOMED SDN BHD
COMPANY BACKGROUND
The company where I have done my industrial training was SM BIOMED SDN BHD which is situated in Sungai Petani, Kedah. I have done my training as industrial trainee under Analytical Research & Development Depatment (ARD). The main focus area of the company is SM Biomed Sdn Bhd developed a new chapter in the health care industry in Malaysia by setting up an integrated facility to manufacture Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and completed Formulations in 1991. Powered by a sincere desire to deliver affordable products and improve quality of life, the company is committed to innovation, development, manufacturing and marketing. Today, SM Biomed Sdn Bhd cherishes the distinction of being Asia's largest producer and the fourth largest producer of macrolide antibiotics in the world and also Malaysia’s largest pharmaceutical exporter. The manufacturing facility is located in the northern peninsular of Malaysia industrial town of Sungai Petani, surrounded by lush green surroundings and strategically close to the major Air and Sea Port of Penang.
WORK THAT I LEARNED
Throughout this internship period I have learnt so many new things about the macrolide antibiotics for example clarithromycin, erythromycin, and azithromycin. I also learned to use the chromatography equipment like High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and got to know about their uses as well. I also learned to calculate the moisture content (water content) in a given sample using a specified method called Karl Fischer Titration method. The water content (moisture content) is determined by the Karl Fischer titration method and consists of only water. The findings contain only water, no other volatile matter whereas Loss on Drying (LOD) is measured by heating the sample in an oven below its melting point and includes all volatile matter including water and solvent material. Loss on Drying (LOD) is an unspecific analytical technique which removes not only water but all other volatile impurities such as alcohol from the sample. I have learned to check the purity of the antibiotic sample using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). I also got to know a lot on how to identify the chromatography peaks and I learned to integrate the chromatogram graph. The chromatogram is a two-dimensional plot with the detector response concentration given by the ordinate axis, and the abscissa represents the time. The detector gives a response as a peak, the height of which should be ideally dependent on the concentration of the particular component. Each peak represents a component present in the sample. The goal of chromatographic peak integration is to obtain retention times, heights, and areas of these peaks. Last but not least, I also learned to calibrate the analytical balance, pH meter and also the Karl Fischer Autotitrator. It is important to calibrate the equipments so that we can be confident in the results that being measured and it is also necessary for reliable, accurate and repeatable measurements. The calibration aim is to eliminate any measurement uncertainty by maintaining the reliability of the test equipment.
KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM DAILY TASKS :
- Able to handle analytical instruments like HPLC, GC, Karl Fischer Autotitrator, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer as well as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR).
- Able to improve understanding regarding the macrolide antibiotics like Clarithromycin, Erythromycin and Azithromycin.
- Chromatographic purity test, related compound test as well as residual solvent testing of the finished product, intermediates using HPLC and GC.
- Moisture content test using Karl Fischer Autotitrator.
- Learn practical analysis of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and intermediate compounds produced at Research & Development Department.
SKILLS GAINED FROM THE TRAINING :
- Refined skills to communicate with the ones at higher position.
- Developed soft skills which are mostly relevant to adapt at the working environment.
- Able to work and complete tasks given independently and with team.
- To be able to work at industry and able to complete given tasks at given time.
- Able to improve my critical thinking skills by analyse and evaluate a situation or issue.
