Internship Training at the Disaster of Preparedness and Prevention Centre (DPPC)

During the 3 months of internship training, my training style involved work from home most of the time and some of the site visitation on the DPPC office at the second floor of MJIIT building and Malaysia-Japan Advanced Research Centre (MJARC) UTM PAGOH. I have been exposed to the project management role as I am under the supervision of Dr. Siti Uzairiah, the senior vice- director of DPPC. I was assigned to distribute the survey questionnaire for Multi Approach Guideline for Resilient Office Buildings towards Reducing Disaster Risk (MAGROB).

The project is about flood in Malaysia where it is usually occurred in the east of peninsular Malaysia during monsoon season such as Pahang, Kelantan and Johor. It is also focused on the multi- hazard situation the dual disaster situation in which flood occurs amidst of COVID-19. It focuses on the building resilience such as coping mechanisms to the people and the community in the context of building resilient by the dual disaster situation by implementing MAGROB, the minute meeting was also reported and recorded and the suitable building of selected were selected in Kota Tinggi and Mersing, Johor in the report.

Apart from that, I went to the laboratory to conduct a few experiments such as Dionex Ion Chromatography to analyse the ionic energy in the sample solution. The Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Risk Control were also observed and analysed. Chemical inventory of chemical was also recorded. I am fortunate to be able to went to Malaysia-Japan Advanced Research Centre (MJARC) for factory visitation in UTM Pagoh. The staff and some of the intern student were exposed to fast-composting process using MRM-01 at which the raw material was the 250 kg of rice husk were converted to compost material together with some moisture. The rice husk was transported to the machine using hopper for several round and were weighted to ensure the total weight is 250 kg per cycle of composting.

Reflection as Research Intern in DPPC

I have gained several knowledge such as working individually under minimal supervision of my supervisor and working from home for the first time in my life. Besides, during my first working experience I were exposed to the management team for MAGROB project together with Dr. Siti Uzairiah, Miss Nurul Huda and Miss Nur Arzwin for the data collection of this project as mentioned in my profile. I also responsible for the reporting and minute meeting writing in every meeting to be recorded.

Moreover, I am also exposed to the lab management such as chemical inventory, Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC), and Ionic chromatography machine. I was assigned to tabulate all the data in excel spreadsheet and present my finding on the same day to Mdm. Nur Ain and Mr. Syahir as my superior in the office during the laboratory visit.

Last but not least, during the Malaysia-Japan Advanced Research Centre (MJARC) site visitation, my colleagues including Shania and Asmira and Hemavathi were all responsible to collect all the raw material which can be vary since it is waste composting centre that perform fast-composting process. During our visitation, the raw material used was rice husk and the product were dampened with some amount of water and moisture and the we observed the colour changes after the cycle completed.
