PRINCIPLE OF CHEMICAL PROCESS II - Chapter 9

Finals are around the corner. what I have written is a little of what I have learned in Chapter 9 Principle of Chemical Process about 2 weeks ago. Firstly, the highest tribute to the PM Dr Azeman to give us time to prepare reflection.

Chapter 9 does not have too much different from chapter 8. Mostly, the way of the calculation. Also, it need to do mass balance first and energy balance. For mass balance, it depends on the question. Sometimes we need use the atomic balance and sometimes use the extent of reaction or so on. So called, we need to revise the basic and adding some new way to solve certain question. Not to forget, the Hess Law. New law to be learnt in this topic.

Done with mass balance, we need to construct the inlet-outlet enthalpy table. Each flow rates, has its own enthalpy. This table important for energy balance calculation. But remember, do not forget to include the reference state of the chemicals enter and out.

Next, the energy balance. There two types of methods to calculate energy balance. The heat of formation and the heat of reaction. Table B.1 , table B.2 and so on played the important role in this calculation. For heat of reaction, we need to calculate the extent of reaction first.

PRINCIPLE OF CHEMICAL PROCESS II - Chapter 8

Entering the new semester in September, one of the subjects that I take is Principle of Chemical Processes 2. The pre-requisite of this subject of this subject is PCP 1. Basically, in this semester, this subject is more related to energy balance. However, we still need to apply basic mass balance as the introduction of more advance calculation.

In Chapter 8, we learn about state properties, hypothetical process path, and procedures on how to perform energy balance. In hypothetical process path, we learn the step by step on how a substance changes its phase from one to another. It’s not just the phase that is changing; the temperature and pressure also change. However, only one of these things is changeable, and the other remains constant. We also learn Watson Correlation, Kopps Rule, Raoults Law, and we use the Anotoine equation again.

In this chapter also, we learn how to use psychometric chart. It’s a chart that consist of many variables, which is dew point temperature, humid volume, saturation heat, dry bulb and wet bulb temperature and many more. From this chart, we could get many information that can be used in our calculation for the problem given.

Lastly, we learn about adiabatic humidification. Adiabatic means that the heat removed or gains to or from the surrounding is zero. However, in the book, it states that the heat still exists but only during the process of gas to become liquid. So that’s the end of my reflection of chapter 8.

PRINSIP KEJURUTERAAN KIMIA (PRINCIPLE OF CHEMICAL PROCESS )

SKKK1113-04 ( PRINCIPLE OF CHEMICAL PROCESS 1 )

Principle of chemical chemical process is one of the compulsory subject for the first year students of 2nd semester of the UTM's Chemical Engineering students. For the section 04 of this course which is my section, the lecturer assigned to expose us to the basic of chemical process was Assoc. Prof. Dr Azeman Mustafa who the one stick to us from the first week until the end of this course. Our lecture usually is on Wednesday and Friday from 8.00 am until 10.00 a.m. Sometimes the lecture is replace on Thursday to make us easier when it need to combine with the other section. And the favourite venue of course the N29 smartclassroom or at the room of the N03 (FPREE).

Basically, student will go through the course to learn the basic of chemical processes, process variables and unit operations which is will be use wide in chemical industry. This course introduces students to the chemical engineering profession and the fundamental operations of chemical process equipment. It also provides students with the basic principles of chemical engineering material balances as well as calculation techniques to solve material balance problems for chemical process systems and equipment. It also provides students with the basic principles of the First Law of thermodynamics and its applications.

 

And according to the learning outcomes, the exposure of this course to the students will increase their understanding to :

1. carry out unit conversion and equipment identification for various chemical processes, process variables and unit operations in chemical industry

2. calculate mass balance on single or multiple process units with or without recycle, purge, or bypass streams for non-reactive processes.

3. solve mass balance calculations on single or multiple process units with or without recycle, purge, or bypass streams for reactive processes

4. perform and analyze mass balance calculations of single phase system

5. demonstrate mass balance calculations of multiple component gas-liquid systems at equilibrium

6. solve the problems using first law of thermodynamics and conservative equations by identifying forms of energy, reference state conditions and state properties

7. conduct problem solving solution of mass and energy problem using principle of conservation.

 

For the next and incoming semester, this course will go through more further in chemical process which is the next level of principle of chemical process which is named Principle of Chemical Process 2. And from my understanding, this course also related to the course Seperating 1 and Seperating 2..
