MINI REPORT :
Sukan Sains Komputer 2023 (SUSKOM '23) is an annual sports program organised by PERSAKA to promote healthy physical and mental activities among students and staff of the computing faculty. The program had been conducted virtually for three consecutive years due to the COVID-19 pandemic but we had the opportunity to gather physically in the year 2023. PERSAKA aimed to cultivate a holistic health culture among the Faculty of Computing community, extending beyond academic and work aspects. This event served as a dynamic platform fostering the development of communication skills, adaptability and leadership and teamwork skills.
In terms of communication skills, as crew members, we had to communicate instructions and plans effectively. This experience sharpened our communication skills, fostering clarity, conciseness and precision in conveying information. As for adaptability, organising a multifaceted event required flexibility and the ability to navigate unforeseen challenges. Being the head of the technical team definitely contributed immensely to my leadership and team working skills as I lead a team of people that I've never worked with before, so it was definitely an insightful experience.
The program took place at the available sports facilities in UTM and it featured both physical and electronic sports. Physical sports included futsal, badminton, frisbee, chess and basketball while electronic sports consisted of Mobile Legends, EA Sports FC 24 and Valorant. All students and staff of the Faculty of Computing were encouraged to participate in any sport, providing them with enjoyable experiences and the opportunity to strengthen the bond within said community.
SELF-REFLECTION :
Being a part of the organising team for SUSKOM '23 has provided me with many experiences and insights. Coordinating a multifaceted sports program demanded effective communication and adaptability on my part. I had never been part of a technical team for an event before and I suddenly got to be the head of this one. At first, I was extremely nervous and wasn't sure if I would have been able to handle the role. But over time, I slowly understood my job scope and managed it with the help of my team. One of my tasks included handling the canopy. I contacted about 10 different companies to find out quotations and we eventually settled with one.
It was of utmost importance that I communicated my exact specifications to the canopy companies in order to get what we wanted. This really helped build my communication skills in terms o effectiveness. It took some time for me to adapt to this position as the head of the technical department but I had a really good team who never really had issues completing given tasks so it was not too hard managing everything. Collaborating with diverse individuals and working towards a shared goal required effective leadership and teamwork skills. I found myself navigating through organisational dynamics, understanding the strengths of team members, and understanding where everyone could contribute their best.
Beyond logistical considerations, the event contributed to the holistic development of participants by fostering a healthy lifestyle and sense of community within the Faculty of Computing. It felt good to be a part of this well-organised event that helped me refine my skills and reinforce the significance of purposeful event management.
