UKQF 2312 |CARING SOCIETY|

Community Service at Benut under Caring Society

Programme Information:

This program was presented on two occasions, on June 3rd and June 10th, 2023, in Kampung Tampok Laut, Benut, Johor Bahru. The umbrella organization for this program was the UKQF 2312 Caring Society, which consists of 34 students and enrolls in the same course between sessions 22 and 23. We were tasked with fixing the challenges the Benut Community encountered and creating a solution for the community itself so that they could easily supply our nation with the highest-quality clams because the site is actually a place that grows clams.

Graduate Attributes:

1. Thinking Skills:

As I indicated in the opening introduction, we must overcome the concerns raised by the community and devise answers to the problems they encounter. As an example, the main issue they face is the clam grader machine, which is quite old machinery and consumes far too much human energy. So we, as problem solvers, had to think critically about how to solve the problems, and yes, we were able to solve the problem with the support of our own UKQF 2312 instructor.

2. Adaptability:

I declared that I had learned adaptation because the role I play in this course is quite significant, second only to that of a president, it is a secretariat. I've never signed up for one. I dare to call myself a new bean because it was a whole new experience for me, and I need to adjust to that role smoothly without even thinking to run away from the responsibilities given to me.  I've learned a lot of new things, such as how to create paperwork from scratch, how to be a third party in charge of a program, how to be a student representative and voice their opinions to upper management, such as CAEL. The most important thing is that I was able to adapt to the circumstances despite the tight schedule, nonetheless, with the support of the other students in the class, who played a huge role in making my role easier to play as they gave me their whole commitment throughout the sessions.

Position/ Role in this Programme:

Participants | Secretary of UKQF 2312

Mini Report:

UKQF2312's Community Service Learning at Kampung Benut is a program that works with the other Service Learning Co-Curriculum at UTM, all under the umbrella of the Community Benut Organization. We received a directive to undertake community service for the Benut community, which has a significant influence that will last in the long run. For that, we from the Caring Society subject were motivated to be a part of the organization, which took 3 months of preparation, 2 days of putting ideas into action, and 1 day of evaluating our curricular activity at the CESCO event. Ending with the cherry on top of winning the greatest service learning executed this year, which is the highlight of the event, we were overjoyed since our efforts had been recognized and most important thing is that the people of Benut benefited from our assistance.

Self-Reflection:

At the end of the day, I felt a big boulder lift from my shoulder, as this is a significant duty for me because I am dealing with real-life issues that must be resolved, and I have to meet their expectations within the timeframe provided. All of this gave me a good idea of how we should approach our future clients since I regard the community as my client, who came to me and truly trusted me to assist them in solving their problems. Overall, it was an experience I was glad to be a part of, and along the way, I made new friends. Meeting the community also made me realize that there are a lot of outskirts communities that actually need our help to make their daily lives easier and more liveable, without us realizing that a small gesture can make someone's life better.
