ID CHLYSE RUT's Reflection
Abstract
A novel virus outbreak now known as Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) happened in December 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China; this paper doves into a virus-host prediction of this virus’s sequences extracted from Nucleotide Centre Biotechnology Information, GenBank. Studies on virus-host prediction have been published in recent years but “VIDHOP” a predicting tool created by Florian Mock will be used on COVID-19 to obtain potential host results. The datasets retrieved from Kaggle on coronavirus includes host information and nucleotide sequences. After aligning the sequences using Clustal Omega, the data is run through Google Colaboratory to prepare the cleaned data as input for VIDHOP. Cleaning up, sorting to subsets of hosts, extracting nucleotide sequences, and finally giving the data to VIDHOP in its proper syntax. The VIDHOP program uses its CNN+LSTM architecture to process the 2375 sequences and sort them to what host it calculates to be of a potential reservoir to COVID-19. This paper records an approximate accuracy of 80% on VIDHOP’s prediction although the result obtained might still be doubtful as the result from the Phylogenetic tree does not correlate with the result obtained in this research, there could be a problem in faulty, limited data or under progressed neural networks. Though better computing power or updated datasets could further be used in this work to boost the accuracy of its result.

On the 23rd November in 2018, an International Exchange Student Programme was held in the Faculty of Build Environment and Surveying, UTM by the Centre of Innovative Planning Development (CiPD). I had volunteered myself to be one of the facilitators to the mentioned programme. 120 students from Nagasaki Higashi High School had participated in this programme, and every facilitator will have at least 3 students in their group. I on the other hand had 4 students, and they were very lovely, very engaging in the discussions and we all shared at least one mutual interest which each other. It was really fun, and I really had a great experience throughout the event. Below is picture of me and them.
These ladies were very lovely.
What I gained through the programme:
1. Friendship
2. Improved Understanding with the cultural difference
3. Communication through body language is key
4. Improved interacting skill
On the 7th December 2018, Okayama Ryukoku High School has visited UTM for a cultural exchange programme organized by the Centre of Innovative Planning Development Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying UTM. There were 200 students from the school that had participated in the programme. I have volunteered to be the facilitator forthe programme, and I was assigned six students from the mentioned school. Below is a picture of me and the students from Okayama Ryukoku High School.
What I have gained through this programme:
1. Japanese students that I was assigned to have poor proficiency in English but that didn't stop us from having fun that day, so i learned that language isn't a barrier, if you really want it to work, it can work out as long as you have the will to carry out your duty.
2. Communication using body language is key.
3. Teamwork with fellow facilitators to keep the programme going, and to handle problems that may happen throughout the programme.
One of the very best experience I had so far. Looking forward for more international related programmes in the future.
Bayu Camp 5.0 by Perwakilan Mahasiswa/i Sabah UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA (PERMAS UTM)
On the 21st and 22nd September 2018, PERMAS has conducted a 2 days and 1 night camp called "BAYU CAMP 5.0" in Pasir Lanun which objectively held to i) build relationships between the fresh intakes and also the Sabahan seniors ii) and also to give them a brief orientation of what UTM has to offer and also an exposure of the events held by PERMAS UTM.
I am one of the MT for PEMAS UTM, hence the director of the event has chosen me to be the head unit of multimedia. Thus, I have worked hard to design the logo, certificate, the setup throughout the camp and also to be their 24/7 photographer.
It was a challenge when we had to deal with the short circuit that happened because of the water heaters. However, we dealt it professionally. Even though there were minor problems that has prevented the camp to go as smoothly as we imagined it to be but the participants gave us positive feedbacks nonetheless! However, hopefully in the future, we will able to manage and anticipate any problems before conducting an event.
The things I have learned:
1) Be punctual
2) Be adaptable
3) Be humble
4) Be professional dealing with problems
5) Accept that everyone make mistakes
6) Keep giving updated reports to the person in charge
7) Be responsible
8) Be creative dealing with problems
9) Always keep a plan B just in case Plan A goes wrong
10) Be forgiving
On the 24th of June until 30th June, I have spent the whole week in Japan for the Tokyo Smarttech'18 programme.
Tokyo Smarttech'18 programme was a visitation event on one of the Universities in Tokyo, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.
We have spent two days in the University and we sure learned a lot of how improved their implementation of technology in their studies and how their technology products were structured in an innovative way!
Below is an attachment of one of the pictures we took with one of the professors in TUAT.
Three main things I have learned throughout the programme:
1) I have learned to be more adaptable in a different country. There were several recycle rules that we were asked to follow during our stay in Japan, and thus teaching me that we really do need to love our nature.
2) Japanese culture is unbelievably unique and you can't get enough of it, there were a number of experience we had throughout the stay, for instance of how kind and helpful of Japanese people are and also how their service are really top notch!
3) Teamwork and volunteering , a day before going to TUAT, we divided ourselves into groups of two, one of the groups has volunteered to search for the University beforehand while the other group was to continue the day as planned on the tentative.
Objectively, there were a lot more things I have learned but most of them I took as personal motivations.
As a nutshell, it was a successful event. We have spent well our 7 days stay in Japan.
On the 22nd March 2018 - Perwakilan Mahasiswa/i Sabah UTM (Permas UTM) has collaborated with UNESCO and 5ETP to organize a charity event whereby there was a total of 37 participants who joined to make it as a successful event. We were asked to gather at 10 p.m at FAB bus stop for registration while waiting for the UTM bus to arrive. As we finally arrived at the location, we divided ourselves into 3 groups. Each group was assigned to different location, finding homeless people and distributing food to them. I was assigned to join the third group, and we went to the mall to find the homeless. Surprisingly, there were a lot of homeless people in that location specifically. It was sad to see, and I do sympathize their condition, it was a really heartwarming feeling when I distributed food to them, some of them did smile and gave their gratitude towards us as they thanked for the food. It was an amazing experience to be honest, and it moved me to be more grateful. It seems that there are far more unfortunate people in this world, and it is unutterably selfish of us to be sad about something that is insignificant like a broken phone or not getting enough sauce in our burgers where there are people who has far worst condition than what we were going through. Hence, I hope that there will be more charity event like this and I would gladly participant in them to ensure that I can contribute some effort in helping them.

JOHOR BAHRU, 25 FEBRUARY 2018 – Malaysia Bioinformatics Student Conference (MABIOS) 2018 was organised by 5 Excellence Track Programmes (Global Leadership Tracks) with the collaboration of Persatuan Mahasiswa Sains Komputer (PERSAKA) from 24th to 25th of February 2018 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
The conference was a platform to provide the insight on current and future trend of bioinformatics to the participants and bond undergraduate bioinformatics students from different universities together. The participants came from five different universities such as Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Management and Science University (MSU), Multimedia University (MMU) and UTM.
A picture taken after the sharing session ended.
This was one of my first volunteering event that I have joined throughout my first year as an undergraduate in UTM. I was assigned to be one of the Multimedia AJK where I handled in designing the t-shirt, poster, logo, and also the teaser for this event. It was an honor to be one of the members that helped this event to be a success! We had taken a preparation starter three months before the due date, and I am glad to say that it was worth the blood and sweat we have poured for it to be a successful event.
The things I learned throughout this event was beyond my expectation. Not only I had improvised my skills in editing, I was also given the opportunity to be in the conference, to listen and learn from the talk session a few of the bioinformatics graduate has shared to us. Therefore, knowing the opportunity as a Bioinformatician. Hence, special thanks for everyone that has made this as a great experience for me.
Thank you for reading.
See you in the next report.
