Reflective Report of Industrial Visit
Description
On 14th November 2018, my classmates and I from section 9 went for a industrial visit to Institute of High Voltage and High Current (IVAT) from 3.00p.m. to 5.00p.m. Ivat is located at P06, School of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. This visit is hosted by Dr. Zulkarnain Ahmad Noorden who is the Deputy Head of Division of Lightning Research and Safety Division. This visit was organized to give students a chance to explore the field of high voltage and current.
Thought/Feeling
In my opinion, this visit was a successful and very exciting. Dr. Zulkarnain, who guide us through the lab, gives out a clear and understandable speech to each and every process of the machine there. It gets more exciting with the closing event which will be included in the video.
Analysis
Dr. Zulkarnain started off the visit with explaining that there are three main division in IVAT, which are Lightning Research and Safety Division (LRSD), High Voltage Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics Division (HVCMDD) and Dielectric and Electrical Insulation Division (DEID). Here, they provide research, tests, calibration services, consultancy and training. Besides, this lab can be used for military and business project. This lab also welcomed customers who come to do the calibration test and for consultancy and training.
Later, Dr. Zulkarnain brought us to walk around in the lab and showed us some equipments. There were so many high voltage and current designs of machine in the lab. Dr. Zulkarnain introduced to us a high voltage transformer, high voltage AC supply, rectifier, capacitor, lightning impulse voltage generator, glass insulator and high voltage of voltage divider. Furthermore, there are also three types of voltage signals which are DC voltage, AC voltage and impulse voltage. For the last event, Dr. Zulkarnain offered us to watch a demonstration of a high voltage test. This test was carried out to investigate the value of voltage that the glass insulator can withstand before its been shorted. In this test, Dr. Zulkarnain was assisted by two assistant engineer, Mr. Mohamad Syahrin Mohamad and Mr. Hairosyam Abd Rani.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, this visit is a great way to expose us to the varying applications of electrical engineering. Although, I am a student of electronic engineering, there are many career opportunities for me in this field.
