Reflective Report of Industrial Talk
Introduction
On 25th September, a program called Industrial Talk was held. It happened at Astana Hall at Kolej Tuanku Canselor at UTM from 2.00p.m. until 5.00p.m. Students from School of Electrical Engineering are required to join the event. There were two sessions which is a talk about Internet of Things (IoT) in Industrial Applications by Mr. Anssi Ikonen, a senior lecturer from Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Science and the second session was a talk on Machine Learning (ML) from Buzzword to Value Creation by Mr. Lock Choon Hou, a design engineer from Intel Corporation.
Thought/Feeling
The talks were full of information which we students didn’t know about and concerns. The information delivered by the speakers excite me as an electronic student because the topic really rung the bell for me especially the Internet of Things. Me as an electronic student were expecting to learn all does thing because it felt some kind of new evolution for electronic department.
Analysis
For the first session by Mr. Anssi Ikonen, he talked about his homeland, Finland. He shared us how his country have a very nice view with the photo or scenery there such as aurora that regularly occurred at Finland but is impossible at Malaysia. Entering the real topic, Internet of Things, he begun by the definition of it. The internet of things is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. For example, My Fridge which is a smart fridge. An IoT is a device connected to the internet that responds based on the input called a sensor. Mr. Anssi Ikonen informed us that the IoT is a human brain-based programme.
As for the second session by Mr. Lock Choon Hou, he talked about Machine Learning (ML). He introduced with the explanation about machine learning and its application. Machine learning is an artificial intelligence (AI) discipline geared toward the technological development of human knowledge. AI can function as a human-like robot. It can allow computer to handle situations by doing analysis, self-training and observation. Siri is one of a good exemplary of AI. Siri can be defined as the personal assistant in a phone which is specifically for Iphone by Apple. Siri can make our life easier where by assisting its user in such many ways such as finding information, getting direction in the map and sending messages. Through this talk, I learned how AI have been improving our daily live so much and still has a room to grow.
Conclusion/Action plan
In my opinion, this kind of talk should be held more in the future because it is beneficial for students especially for us electrical engineering students. I learn more about Iot and machine learning. In the near future, I hope I will be able to design and create a new machine based on these fundamentals.
