Reflection on PC assembly
On 1st November 2017, our lecturer, Dr Noorminshah organised this PC assembly class at computer lab of Faculty of Computing.
From this class, I got to know a lot about pc tower and its components. Our lecturer divides us into a group of 5. So each group got one pc to be operated. So the task was to unplug all the components inside the pc. For the first time I know how to operate the pc and unplug all the components inside. It was challenging at first as the components is so small and the wire is too many, but with help of lab assistant, the process become easier. The was a lot of components inside such as motherboard, central processing unit (CPU) also called a processor, RAM, hard drive, power supply unit, expansion cards, video card and sound card. Besides, we need to write to plug and unplug the pc. We need to remember every step so all the components are placed at the correct position.
Besides, I also learned that it need patient to handle such hardware like this. If not, you might break the tiny pieces of the component and might injure yourself as well.
In a conclusion, it was a very interesting activity and I got so many knowledges about PC. So now I can operate my PC by my own.
Reflection for industrial visit (CICT, MBJB, Cool Code)
On 4th October 2017, a visit to CICT UTM Johor was held by Faculty of Computing. The purpose of the visit is to give exposure to first year students about CICT and the services provided by them. From this visit, many input that I got especially the important knowledge about our Centre of Information and Technology (CICT) and the role of CICT department in the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). This visit really helps me to set our goals to achieve our dream in computer science field. Besides, we should prepare ourselves with our communication skills and other crucial soft skills. Furthermore, this visit really helps me to enhance our knowledge about the other branch in computer science field, the important criteria to become the great developer or programmer and enhance our knowledge about the history and evolution of computers in the world. Finally, we hope that with this visit, it will be the ‘steppingstone’ for us to explore more information about computer science in the future.
While on 22nd November 2017, Faculty of Computing of our section held a visit to Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru. From this visit, I gained so many things. First, after they explained about the applications that they built to help them organized their system; I am more motivated to create my own apps. Then, I also got a chance to know how they manage their big organization and how they handle all the things with professional way. So, I will take this as a lesson to implement this in daily life.
Lastly, on 29th November 2017, our course organized a visit to Cool Code Sdn. Bhd. at UTM Johor. It was really exciting as I can met the founder of the Cool Code which is also the alumni of UTM, Mr Ariff Tukiman. When he talked about his journey, how he started his company in a very young age, he inspired me to achieve my goal in life. He also said anything that happened to us, it is a fate and there must be something good behind it. The rule only one; just does not give up easily. The he also gave some tips how to be successful. So, I will use the tips given to improve my performance in my study and I will make sure that I can be success too just like him one day. The visit really boost up my sprit to study smart and does give up easily on anything I do.
Reflection on a visit to S01, Kolej Tunku Canselor, UTM
On 6th December 2017, the Faculty of Computing organised a visit to S01, Kolej Tunku Caunselor, UTM Skudai and it was compulsory to selected software engineering students to attend this visit. The purpose of the visit is to give more exposure on computational thinking and how it works.
We were divided into a group of 7. So the first activity that we played was origami programmer-compiler game. So basically we were given 2 piece of paper and we need to choose one origami to be created. Then we also need to write down the steps. So, we chose a bird to be created. After all the groups had done the origami, one group will be the programmer and one group will be the compiler. So, the programmer group will tell the step of their origami once and the compiler group need to create the origami based on the other group said.
Basically, what I learned from this game was, as programmers we need to write a simple code (the steps) that can be understand easily by people (compiler). Besides, I also learned that we need to focus on what we do or else we will be lost. And lastly, teamwork is really important as we can generate idea from other and make work a lot easier.
The second activity was tracing a pattern. Each group was given different pattern of block. From the pattern, we need to make an instruction so that other group can make that pattern too. From this activity, different people have different way of thinking. For examples, the other group make the instruction short and concise while the other group make the instruction simple. But at the end, the goal that we are trying to achieve is the same. So no matter how the way we think, there will be a solution to the problem.
In a conclusion, I really enjoyed the activities as we can know each other more and can generate our thinking skills.
