Reflection on a visit to S01, Kolej Tunku Canselor, UTM

On 6th December 2017, the Faculty of Computing organised a visit to S01, Kolej Tunku Caunselor, UTM Skudai and it was compulsory to selected software engineering students to attend this visit. The purpose of the visit is to give more exposure on computational thinking and how it works.

We were divided into a group of 7. So the first activity that we played was origami programmer-compiler game. So basically we were given 2 piece of paper and we need to choose one origami to be created. Then we also need to write down the steps. So, we chose a bird to be created. After all the groups had done the origami, one group will be the programmer and one group will be the compiler. So, the programmer group will tell the step of their origami once and the compiler group need to create the origami based on the other group said.

Basically, what I learned from this game was, as programmers we need to write a simple code (the steps) that can be understand easily by people (compiler). Besides, I also learned that we need to focus on what we do or else we will be lost. And lastly, teamwork is really important as we can generate idea from other and make work a lot easier.

The second activity was tracing a pattern. Each group was given different pattern of block.  From the pattern, we need to make an instruction so that other group can make that pattern too. From this activity, different people have different way of thinking. For examples, the other group make the instruction short and concise while the other group make the instruction simple. But at the end, the goal that we are trying to achieve is the same. So no matter how the way we think, there will be a solution to the problem.

In a conclusion, I really enjoyed the activities as we can know each other more and can generate our thinking skills.
