Position: Committee Team Member Protocol Unit and Participation

• Impact of the activities on the development of the students’ Graduate Attributes

In the Data Engineering Symposium 2021, I got to work several committee members who were mostly from the Data Engineering Course. We all were responsible and had our own jobs to do in our respective units. This event had several impacts on my own Graduate Attributes.

First of all, this event impacted my communication skills by helping improving it further. In helping to prepare for this event I was in the protocol unit, so we had to communicate with each other on how to approach our jobs. Not only that, I also had to communicate with other committee members outside my unit, for example I had to communicate with the event moderator regarding the scripts where they relayed their feedback to me regarding the written script and vice versa. Therefore, joining this event helped me to further improve my communication skills.

            This coincides with the next Graduate Attribute that this also improved was my teamworking skills. I had to work together with other people in the Protocol Unit, not only that I also worked together with other committee members such as the moderator, the director and the Multimedia unit.

            The final Graduate Attribute that this event personally helped me was the Adaptability Skills. When writing the script, I had encountered a problem with writing the background of the speaker. Since I did not know the speaker personally and we did not have any time to interview or ask the speaker. So, I did an internet background search through the speaker’s social media platforms and other webinars that she had attended.

• Self-strength/advantage towards the activities:

In my opinion, one of the greatest strengths is that I am very committed when I am given a job. If I am given a job, I will make sure that my work will be done in effective, efficient fashion, and to make sure I finish the job well before a deadline. In this event, when given the job to write the entire script of the event for other committee members, I managed to finish it in roughly one days’ time.

      Another strength of mine is my adaptability, as mentioned above I encountered a problem when writing the script, I managed to adapt and handle the problem.

• Challenges and how to overcome them

One of the challenges that I faced was during the event was improving my communication skills. I had a miscommunication with the director of the event, where he misunderstood that I had not written the script for the closing part when in fact I had already done so, but I poorly relayed it to him. But the misunderstanding was quickly cleared up.

The second challenge that I faced as mentioned above, was when writing the script and had no gauge to write the background for the speaker. I overcame this by running a background research on the speaker’s social media platform on my own through the internet. For example, looking through Facebook, LinkedIn and previous webinars attended by the speaker.
