Introduction
This report explained in great detail regarding the industrial visit to Gallerium Perpustakaan Sultanah Zanariah which was located in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru, on 24th October 2019. First and foremost we would like to thank Dr. Adila Firdaus Binti Arbain, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia lecturer of Technology and Innovation System (TIS) subject for giving us the opportunity to learn about Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) history and their services.
Details Of Journey
On 24th October 2019, Sunday we departed to Perpustakaan Sultanah Zanariah which was located in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), via car using Grab service at 3.00 p.m. as there are no transportation provided. We arrived at 3.15 p.m. and were divided into 2 sections by Dr. Adilah to make our visit more organizable. We were in the second section and our turn starts at 4.15. The program ends at 5.00 p.m and we safely arrived at 5.15 p.m.
Detailed Descriptions
Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) is a support department in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia that offers and delivers information and communication technology (ICT) services for the university especially infrastructure, system development, and academic activities.
Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) start its services in 1988 as a computer center in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor Bahru campus and temporarily placed at Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) department improves the main system in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 1990 by using the new mainframe at that time which is IBM 3090-12J, the system improved include :
- Student Information system
- Student financial system
- Student examination system
- Student timetable system
By 1992, computer networks in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia were also upgraded, which were the use of email on the BITNET network, automation office system(PROFS) and internet network. In 1995, the main computer was connected to System Network Architecture(SNA), Ethernet and Token Ring.
Service provided from Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) includes infrastructure, application development and management, Technical support and facilities. The infrastructure provided is UTMWIFI, which act as the internet connection throughout the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia campus, for students, lecturers, and staff used. Application development and management that was developed by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is UTMSMART, which are used throughout Universiti Teknologi Malaysia student’s daily life, from taking the attendance to the news in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Technical support work to maintain network connection Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, while the facilities provided include UTMPORTAL.
At the Gallerium Perpustakaan Sultanah Zanariah, we were explained by the presenter regarding the mainframe used in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The mainframe tape subsystem is used as backup of the student and staff database as well as an information system. This mainframe was used during the year 1987 until 1995 in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia library while the IBM P70 model 6554-673 was used during 1998, contributes to work performance with its ability to support up to 16MB on disk storage, the computer system provided a performance improvement on the desktop operation. Next, IBM 550 POWER server is an outstanding performance due to its fastest chip during 1990. It was considered as an apt system for a medium-sized database at the time. In relation to the Library’s technology, the application of the library management system on a ‘freeze’ terminal which operated on a Mainframe was seen as a great impact on Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Library. In 1976 , IBM (3420) was used until 2010.
The presenter also explained the Microfilm Camera Zeutschel OK 102 which is a high accuracy camera that used to photograph small images of UTM theses. The images were recorded into microfilms and was first used in UTM library in 1986 until around 2007 while the microfilms reader was used to read the content of a microfiche. It was an information in the form of a flat film sheet and contained text and images. The content of the microfiche were read according the order of letters on the machine and the display could be expanded when needed.

Reflections
Our responsible as students are to learn and study. That is responsible as a fellow student, being a part of computer science means we are the forefront in the evolution of technologies and it's our responsibility to fix the flaws and defects and improve its efficiency.
We learn from our visit to Gallerium Perpustakaan Sultanah Zanariah, that technologies are improving with time, seeing pieces of technologies that are considered outdated in our eyes but were once great pieces of advance technologies make us aware of the rapid technological changes. The needs of technologies encouraged our group to be the originator of future innovations. The broad scope of our course, which is computer science make us realize the significance of it, in improving the human qualities of living.
However, being a great innovator does not happen just because we wished for it. We need a strong foundation in our studies and being in UTM is the start of it. We planned to study computer-related subjects in a group as different people have their own advantages and weakness. We also need to broaden our scope of studies and are not limited by courses. We are living in an age where information comes from our fingertips.
Student Feedback
The industrial visit went successfully. Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) industrial visits showcase a lot of technologies that were previously used in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia(UTM),from an older computer, which are huge in size to computer storages that are in the size of a wardrobe .The presenters know what they are explaining and are very helpful. We learn that technologies take time to be developed, from a huge components and parts in computer to a smaller and more compact size.
