Reflection : Webinar Opportunities and Strategies in Crisis by Captain Cyrano Latiff
A webinar entitled “Opportunities and Strategies in Crisis” today is delivered by Captain Cyrano Latiff – A pilot survivor of SQ006 as the special guest speaker and assist by the host which is Dr. Helen Tan – Senior lecturer of AHIBS.
The webinar starts with an explanation more about Crisis Management definition as a process by which an organization deals with a disruptive and unexpected event that threatens to harm the organization on its stakeholder. Three stages of Crisis Management are Pre Crisis – Crisis Response – Post Crisis.
After that, Captain Cyrano starts explaining the Tragedy of SQ Flight 006 Boeing 747-412. He was there with 1 Senior Pilot and 1 other pilot flying from Singapore to Taiwan on 31st October 2000. Before landing, the pilots already check all of the things including the weather and so on. operating the flight attempted to take off from the wrong runway at Chiang Kai-shek International Airport when the weather is heavy typhoon rain. The tragedy happens in Taiwan a few minutes before landed. The most injured and fatal side is in the middle of the aircraft because the fuel tank is near the wings. The aircraft crashed into construction equipment on the runway, killing 81 of the 179 occupants aboard.
After the Tragedy, there was a complicated case because the location in Taiwan but the Aircraft Company is in Singapore while the manufacturer of the aircraft is in America. But the Company supports the Pilots and still paying their salary. Captain Cyrano also supported by his wife and his family and he still gives a mental health program to pilot and being a part of several aviation academies in Singapore
That’s all the reflection from an amazing webinar today, it gives me a lot of lessons learned from what the speakers have been through. Thank you
Reflection : My Experience facing COVID-19 Pandemic
I've had an extraordinary experience during the COVID-19 pandemic that made me through an unexpected trip.
As usual, all the students go back to UTM in the first week of February to begin the new semester. Day after day passed, We are just doing teaching and learning activities like usual. It all started by the announcement by my faculty which is AHIBS state that they're going to do online class learning due to increasing cases of coronavirus. But, other faculties still doing face to face learning. On 16th March, I was appointed as a disseminator of information in the COVID-19 task force for Indonesian students. I help Indonesian students related to data collection and information related to the COVID-19 and arranging return procedures from the Indonesian consulate of Johor Bahru.
On 17th March, Malaysia's Government announce the partial lockdown from March 18 to 31. In that situation, I was very doubtful whether to return to Indonesia or not considering the risks I faced while traveling home. The next day, when I heard the news that there were limited cruise ships to Indonesia, Me and 3 of my friends decided to went to Indonesia via Batam Island. At 3.00 pm, me and my friends went to Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Port from Stulang to Harbour Bay. It's really crowded people waiting in line to get into the ferry we were also required to fill out a Health Alert Card that contained data on our physical condition and personal information.
The trip only takes 2 hours. When we arrived at Harbour Bay, we had to queue up with people who were pressing and protesting because they were tired of queuing. after a long queue, immigration officers ripped half of our Health Alert Card and asked us to stand in front of a machine and the machine will checked our body temperature. After leaving the immigration check, My other 2 friends already waiting in front of the store to pick us up and I stay at her house until tomorrow morning flight. We talked at night about many things and order food online, and after several hours we fell asleep.
In the early morning, I prepare all of the things such as passport, ID, and my luggage because I had to take a long trip today which takes 11 hours. My friends drove me to Hang Nadim International Airport, Batam and I said goodbye to my friend. Suddenly, The airline officer said that I almost missed my flight and asked me to ran fast because I was the last passenger before the plane departure to Pontianak. After 1 hour, I arrived at Supadio International Airport, Pontianak and directly entered the plane to Surabaya and fortunately they offered free luggage for our suitcases. Since Pontianak flights to Balikpapan are limited, I have to transit on Java Island to fly to Balikpapan. After 2 hours the pilot announce that we need to wait for about 30 minutes before landing because there is training in skydiving by the air force.
After a while, I landed at Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, and immediately replace the mask and wear a hand sanitizer due to crowding with many passengers. I bought some meals at the airport and directly go to the plane because it is the boarding time. It took one and a half hours until I landed at Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport, Balikpapan, and My father already waiting for me outside to pick me up.
I really happy to experience this unexpected trip, It gives me a valuable story to tell.
International Student Society (ISS) Indonesia
Being an International Student is not an easy job, especially when you don't know anyone or friends in that country. That's why I'm going to tell how this organization is on our side to build one another. I accepted to be in this organization for being staff on the Departement of Economic and Entrepreneurship. Actually I don't expect I will be joining this department remembering that I choose the Department of Public Relations as my first option. After about 8 months being a part of the organization makes a huge difference to me.
"Useful for Others", That's the best word describes this organization. The Program that we organize is to help and develop our members. In my department, we are focusing on helping and developing young Indonesian Entrepreneurs in UTM. "Cafe Corner", One of the best events that we held for Entrepreneurs to promote their foods with a well-decorated arcade into the concept of 'Cafe' with Live Music by Sanggar Musik PPI UTM.
In other departments, they made activities that involve seniors teaching juniors in preparation for the final exam. Another department, They made a Festival for promoting Indonesian Culture.
There are lots of beneficial programs that we do in these organizations and it would be too long to tell how I describe how lucky I am to be a part of this amazing organization.
