INDUSTRIAL TRAINING JOURNEY

To be honest, my internship journey was quite a roller coaster ride. There were days where it feels so bright and I would walk around the plant asking questions to the operators or plant supervisors, and there were days where I would be counting down hours left of working hours, while sipping a cup of hot coffee. However, despite any circumstances, I made it clear to myself since the very first day I started my internship that I will gain and learn as much as I possibly can throughout the short span of 12-weeks’ time, and I am thankful to have accomplished that goal of mine.

I have chosen to do my internship at Palmamide Sdn. Bhd. which is the subsidiary company of one of the biggest oleochemical producers in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad(KLK) Oleo.

Assigned under the Production department with the supervision of a process engineer whom I highly look up to, I got to observe how a team of engineers work together with other departments to ensure the plant can be run smoothly, efficiently and safely and that the daily production target is achieved.

Moreover, there were 2 tasks and 2 process studies that were assigned by my industrial training supervisor throughout the 12-weeks period.

I had the chance to apply several skills and knowledge which were taught from courses in MJIIT such as using AutoCAD to make Piping & Instrumentations Diagram (P&ID), and analysing wastewater sample from a wastewater treatment plant.

Besides the technical skills gained, I find it also important to have a good relationship with the staff from various departments. By doing so, I had the chance to grasp an in-depth explanation from the subject-matter expertise such as learning the differences of valves used in the plant and its mechanisms from the Maintenance team, understanding the techniques of analysing the quality and chemical components of the final products from the Quality Control department, and also understanding the principles of a closed-loop control system from the Electronics & Instrumentation department.

In a nutshell, it has been a sweet journey of deep learning and first-hand experiencing the working environment.

Thermodynamics 1st Year Presentation

On the last few weeks of our final semester in 1st year, we were assigned in groups of random members to make a presentation and a report. There were around 8 groups and each are given the chance to pick a different topic Thermodynamics-related. The theme was Saving Energy to Save The World. My group chose Carbon Footprint for Domestic Applications. My group members include Nisha as the group leader, Fisyah, Ina, Jiji, Amir Awal, and me, Adilah.

As the assignment was given in the midst of a very hectic week, or perhaps we procrastinated it to the last few weeks, we didn't have much time to do a real group meeting. Therefore, all tasks and roles are divided equally only through our Whatsapp group and Email. In spite of that, my group members did such an excellent job as everyone did their parts really well. Everything went very smoothly during our presentation as well as the report. I am grateful to have such responsible group members as we help each other when a problem occurs.

My task was mostly making the slideshow, because I volunteered myself to do it. I love making slideshows because I am more of a graphic person rather than having to create sentences/writing. To make the slideshow, I had to read the whole report of our group and summarize all the points, thus, put it all into 10 slides, as stated in the assignment requirements. It was a challenge but I had fun making it. I put a lot of pictures into it because I want to make sure my classmates don't get bored while listening to our presentation.

Unfortunately, on the day of the presentation itself, our lecturer, Prof. Masafumi Goto had to cancel and postpone our presentation as all Degree students are obliged to go to the MJIIT Undergraduate Dean's List Award.. We were all devastated because the postponed date were in the middle of the exam week. We were afraid it will disturb our study time as the gap days between our papers are the only time we could study. We didn't have a study week and it is a BIG deal for us students.

Fast forward to the real presentation day, despite the exam hustles we were facing, I saw excitement in few of my classmates faces. Probably because we couldn't wait for another burden to be lifted off our shoulders. We didn't have to present in front of the whole class, instead, Prof Masafumi Goto booked a small room just enough space for one group and him to be in. After our presentation, he gave a few constructive comments to us and we truly appreciate it, as it will all be used to improvise our next presentation in the near-future. We took a lot of pictures together to be kept as memories.
