CULTURE FESTIVAL 2021

1) MINI REPORT

As a participant of this event, I joined a program which is the language class program that is held during the culture festival week. For the Language Class program, there are 8 different language classes that were being held which provide basic speaking and reading skills. The language classes that were offered was Russian, Tamil, French, Arabic, German, Mandarin, Korean and Japanese. I registered for the Mandarin class as I am planning to take mandarin as my foreign language later. The event was held on 29th May 2021 from 10 am - 12pm. For the mandarin class, the class was taught by Dr. Yap Teng Teng, a lecturer from University Malay from Faculty Languages and Linguistics. During the class, she taught us basic mandarin introduction, basic numbers in mandarin, the tones of mandarin language, and basic greetings in Mandarin. Since the class is only held for two hours, there are not a lot of things that could be taught in such a short time. However, Dr. Yap managed to help us really learn the tones to pronounce is mandarin language (there are 4 tones) and she make sure we try to pronounce the numbers that she taught and gives feedback on our pronunciation. She corrected us when we pronounced it wrong and complimented the class when we pronounced it right. The language class helped me in developing my communication skills where it help me feel more confident to speak to public and to people that I don't know. The class also helped me learn basic mandarin language and I hope it would help me in my foreign language class later on. 

2) SELF REFLECTION

The language class that was help during the culture festival 2021 was very interesting. The class that I registered for in particular, Mandarin class, was very fun and refreshing. The lecturer that taught the class was very supportive, soft, and understanding. She understands that all of us does not have any knowledge about mandarin language, therefore she taught us slowly to make sure we could understand and catch up. Before entering the class, I didn't know that there are tones to speak in Mandarin. After the class, I know how to talk in mandarin better and I really hope the knowledge that I gained from the mandarin class would help me in my foreign language class later on. I chose Mandarin language because I am actually really interested to learn Mandarin and speak in Mandarin. This class really increased my interest in learning Mandarin language and helped me develop my communication skills in Mandarin.
