INTRODUCTION

FOREST CITY

On the 24th of November, our TIS class went on a trip to two places. The first place we went was Forest City, a mega mixed-use development on four man-made islands in Iskandar Malaysia, Johor. Forest City is an island city spanning more than 30km2. The city utilizes the most advanced 3D multi-layered urban planning concept with ample greenery and no vehicle traversing on its surface, creating a forest-like environment. Besides, Forest city makes contribution to Malaysia’s economy. The Forest city is expected to contribute RM66 billion in tax revenue to the government over two decades.

ONE MAKER

The second place we went was OneMaker Medini, Iskandar, Johor Bahru. OneMaker Group Pte Ltd (OMG) is a leading Maker-centric service provider in the region. The OMG have been supporting and promote by the nascent Maker movement in Singapore since OMG establishment in 2014. Their core business revolves around digital prototyping, Maker education and corporate professional development. In additional, OMG experience in supporting, building and operating Makerspaces for both educational and corporate institutions allow them to better understand their clients’ needs an to serve them well accordingly.

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE

The organization structure of the OneMaker is as following:

SERVICES

In OneMaker Medini, their services involve Makerspace development (Makerspace Specialist), Prototyping and Consulting Services (3D printing, Laser Cutting, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Routing) and Makerspace Pass (Flexi Access Pass).

ACHIEVEMENTS OF ONEMAKER

One of the recent achievements of OneMaker Group Pte Ltd (OMG) in past events was Jump Make-Vember Camp from 19th until 21th November 2018. In this Camp, there were two different activities for the children with different age.

Tinkerer Track is suitable for age 6 until 9 and Maker Track is suitable for age 10 until 12. For activity Tinkerer Track, they will explore paper mechanisms and will be guided to construct simple machines. Then, they will put it all together to build a quirky chain reaction contraption, Rube Goldberg-style from scratch using a variety of materials given to them. For activity Maker Track, Participants need to work on an open design challenge to build interactive experiential machines using a range of hand and power-tools and digital fabrication equipment including the 3D printer and laser cutter. OMG also successfully organized many events such as Sky Camp, Makervilla 2.0 , Creative Crowdfunding and so on.

ACTIVITIES IN ONEMAKER

On the first session in the morning, we had a talk about virtual reality by Shukry Radzi Co-Founder of Gini Technology. GINI Technology deals with virtual reality and it deals with variety as follows: World on world uses computer monitors along with other equipment to feel themselves in virtual world. Immersive systems use head mounted displays to enhance the user’s experience. Telepresence uses sensors to improve immersive systems and allow the user of the immersive system to control robots or other electronic devices from far distances. Mixed reality approaches the topic from a different angle and add virtual elements to the real world.

He also talked about the history of virtual reality such as Sensorama(1957), Aspen movie (1978), Super Cockpit(1982), Virtual Boy by Nintendo(1995) and the most recent, Oculus Rift (2014) which to revive the VR market.

After an interesting presentation about virtual reality. We got introduced to a really interesting topic which is quirky robot. Basically, it requires at least two robots and the goal of the game is that one of the two robots must push the other out of the other robot’s lane to be considered as a winner, but in case of neither of the two robots eliminates the other, the robot with the more space advantage is considered as the winner. Rather than just listening about this interesting topic, we actually implemented what we saw by creating our own robot with a limited set of parts. The great thing about this challenge is that you need to be creative in order to succeed looking on how the choices were limited.

On second session, we were introduced with 4.0 industrial revolution which involves big data and artificial intelligence. Soon, AI will take over most of the jobs that we have in this world. Besides, there were 5 stops for us to join in the session as below:-

  1. 3D printing

First, we were introduced to 3D printer which can print out the object in three dimensions unlike the normal paper printer. Nowadays, 3D printers are used for prototyping the product without using expensive materials and the production duration is very short. The materials for the printers can be plastic, wood, polymer and even chocolate. It is now a common trend for the industries to have a few of 3D printer to make moulds, prototypes, building materials and bricks.

  1. AI head

Next, conductor gave explanation on AI head which uses voice detection. Artificial intelligence is a crucial element that create high possibility in our future. AI head uses Google Home to listen and answer the questions from the user. It can also open the music player to play the song you like in Spotify. AI technology has become more convenient for users to do their daily routine.

  1. colour coding

Then, we were given a briefing on colour or line following robot. This tiny robot can follow the line drawn on the paper and move with the path by using light sensor. The special about this robot is if it detects the order of different colours on the path, the robot will read the order and execute the changes in movement such as stop, rotate, U-turn and accelerate. This kind of colour detection becomes useful in production line of an industry.

  1. 3D design

For the next stop, we learn how to design an #3D object using application software in computer which is Sketchup. The instructor guided us in designing 3D object by using that application and the process of learning is very enjoyable. This application can aid us to design our object in 3D space in computer while not wasting any resources in real world.

  1. Drone flying and coding experience

Lastly, we were brought to the section where a drone can be control without handling the controller but simply coding using computer. The drone is a light device that flies in the air, which mostly used for video shooting in the air. Unlike the usual drone, this drone can be programmed by computer with specific application to execute the flight of the drone with designed distance, path and even flipping in the air. This program is easily to use and it can control tons of drones by just using a computer with a single click.

In the evening, we had a session on design thinking. Conductor gave a briefing on design thinking on generating a new product. Then we had an activity which is designing a future school by using hextile, paperboard and some simple materials. It was so brain-squeezing to come up with an idea on our future school.

REFLECTION

This visit helped us realize how fun this field is considering the amount of interesting stuff we did. The best part about this visit that we actually implemented what we saw such as designing quirky robot. We also learned so many interesting parts about virtual reality’s history and how it was created. (Talal Othman)

I wish to work in fields related to VR and AI in the future; therefore, this trip was extremely useful for me. The visit showed me that the fields I chose are good career paths. Trying to resolve the problems mentioned in the talk will help me prepare for the future. (Omar Othman)

There are a lot of things that I learnt from the visited as it helps me to know and gain more knowledge about the technology in this 21st century such as Virtual Reality know as VR, 3D printing, drone flying using coding, AI head, 3D design and many more. (Nuratifah)

From this visited, it helped me to understand, learn and increase my interest in virtual reality, 3d printing, AI head, color coding, 3d design, and drone flying and coding. Besides, it also helped me to get an idea about the technology's future. (Yew Wan Qi)

From the visit, I learn that new technologies help us to convenient our daily life. We won’t use forces to work while just having a voice command to the machine. It will also replace all the work in our world which will result in increasing rate of unemployment. (Pang Wen Jie)

Overall this visit helped us realize that this field is extremely packed with interesting topics. This visit is very enjoyable and we hope that we can join this kind of activity again.
