Design Thinking Report
INTRODUCTION
It can not be denied that the concept of design thinking has been one of the most important method that must be used in this globalization era. Design thinking concept has already engulfed all developing and develop countries as it brings a lot of advantages and benefits. Critical thinking and other skills are needed to implement the design and thinking concept as it involved five important phases, which is empathy, define, ideate, prototype and testing. In fact, various aspects in human daily life can apply the concept of design thinking to solve any problems with the best solution and ways. Hence, for instance, by implementing the concept of design thinking in privacy and security,
Privacy and security are one of the hot debatable issue to be discussed nowadays. In any kind of system, privacy and security acts as the most vital and crucial element whereby this feature will be the one which secure and protect all the data of individual, community, organization and even a country.
In the past 40 years till now , people get to become more sensitive about their own privacy and data security and sort of laws are set up to protect people’s privacy and security. Some tech-company see the issues and trends and introduced the AI face scanner to the world which in their words it was a more secure identification technology than fingerprint identification.
Emphatize
Observation and research have been done within area of KTDI only.
Define
The main issue on privacy and security aspect is that students are unable to open and enter their room as they lost their keys. Student cannot escape from being forgetful and clumsy. Although they may not be as busy as adult life, it is a norm that they always do not have enough time to do everything at one time. In order to be a successful student, a lot of assignments and practices need to be done as it will improve their understanding and academic achievement. Hence, from doing all of this, it is likely that they may forget their important things, for instance their room key. The small size of the room key can also be a factor of why students often lose their room key. As the size of key room is small, it is very easy to misplace the key room.
Next, the other problem in privacy and security is it is very not convenience for students who are frequently go in and out of room to keep locking and opening the door. It was really time-consuming to lock the door in high frequency and in the same time make noises and disturb the other students.
Furthermore, students are having a hard time to draw money at the ATM due to a long distance to take and have to wait in a long queue. Money is one of the essential needs that students must have in their daily life. For instance, they need to buy foods and take their meal in the correct proposition in order to have an optimum energy to do their tasks and energy.
Ideate
Hence, based on the problems above, we have decided to do some improvements on the current student card. The new and improved student card combines the concept of design thinking in privacy and security aspect which perform the features such as keyless, e-wallet and biometric. Student Card 2.0 is going to apply these features and the students would be benefited a lots from this project such as saving their time , more convenience to do payment and a strengthen security system.
Prototype
We have successfully built a prototype in considering the privacy and security issues we collected from the reflection of students and interviewer. The Student Card 2.0 will be inserted a micro-chip and it can be used when students want to do payment , taking class-attendance and lock the dorm door. We have took several hours to build the prototype and also the scanner system and door lock . We have successfully simulated several conditions of the usage of Student Card 2.0 to test its functions and also the apply scene.
Part III
It is no doubt that we also faced a lots of problems and diversities during the progress to build our prototype from a brainstorming idea to a physical product . First , we have to collect and consider the reflection of students by using Google Form but we only received a few response which are quite not enough for us to evaluate the privacy and security issues in UTM accurately. However, we managed to take strategy face-to-face and do some interview to the students in dorm and class and finally we succeed to overcome the problem due to teamworking of the members .
Part IV
We have conducted the assessment during the end of the project demonstration .Thus, we can easily to figure out the hidden problems in our prototype and save the time to fix the them . It is also easier for us to test our prototype through the assessment in the end of the project demonstration .
Part V
- Sample work : Smart Scanner , Smart Card System
- Empathy: Question 1 : Do you think the Student Card 2.0 work for you ?
User’s Answer : Yes, I found that Student Card 2.0 is useful and has the potential to become popular among the students in UTM .
Question 2 : Do you ever locked the dorm door when you go out in a short period ?
User’ Answer : I have to say I actually did . But sometimes it was very annoying when you have to lock the door frequently even though I was just go out from room for a short while.
Question 3 : In your opinion , do you think it is possible to run the system in UTM ?
User’s Answer : I think the budget to run your project would be hard to take but it do a possible project as long as your team can manage to cut down the budget .

User 1 : Age : 19 Background: UTM First Year Student
User 2 : Age : 19 Background : UTM First Year Student
User 3 : Age :33 Background : UTM Lecturer (Software Engineering)
Define : 1. Students lost their key frequently
- Students have to lock their door even though going out for a short period
- Students have to draw money from ATM which located a great distance from their college
- Students have to record their attendance manually and sometimes the attendance list miss.
Ideate : 1. Take about 2 hours to brainstorm the idea to solve the privacy and security issues in UTM.
- Decide to introduce a new version of student card which is multi-functional
- The new version student card is called Student Card 2.0
- Student Card 2.0 is built with features such as smart-scan and e-payment.
Prototype : We used the green material such as cardboard and used paper to develop the prototype.
Cut down a small piece of cardboard to make a chip and insert on the student card . We also
used some boxes to make a smart-scanner and electric door lock to simulate the function of
Student Card 2.0 . It took about 6 hours to develop the prototype .
Test : After finishing the develop stage of our prototype , we started to do testing to the users.
Some users had a good experience with our prototype and they felt it would bring them
a lot of benefits in their daily school life. Some users suggested us to do more improvement
on our prototype as it wasn’t enough to fulfill their needs .
Reflection
Our goal regard to the course is learning to become an innovative and creative students not only absorb the knowledge but apply what we learn to solve our daily problems. The design thinking program has inspired us to think from a view of a creator instead of an user and we learned quite a lot from such as followed a systematic plan and developed a prototype step by step in the plan. It was also a good lesson indeed for us to learn the importance of learning latest technology and knowledge for ourselves potential improvement in the industry.
