CICT Visit

A visit to the Centre of Information & Communication Technology (CICT) was held on Monday, 1 October 2018. This visit was organised by Technology & Information Systems Lecturers. During this visit, students were introduced to many things such as the terms and policy of UTM ICT the services that the CICT provided for the students and staffs and much more information about CICT. Almost all of the first year students and lecturers were involved in this visit. All of the students that were involved were from the same faculty, which is the faculty of computing .

CICT which is located in building D07 were built in 1975 as a computer centre. Then, in 1981 CICT merged with the computer science department and became a part of computer science facility under the Faculty of Science. In 1984, it was changed into Computer Science Institute. And in 1991, it was turned into Computer Science & Information Systems Faculty and UTM Computer Centre. But then in 2004, Computer Centre was changed again into Centre of Information & Communication Technology (CICT) until now.

CICT was committed to ensuring students and staffs satisfactory rate at a high level in terms of internet services. Because of the slow internet services that can be found at a specific place, CICT plans on increasing the speed, so that the satisfactory rate reached to where it was targeted.

CICT wishes to improve more all of the connection facility within the campus in the near future, although CICT had already made a crucial improvement in the past.

REFLECTIONS

the visit gave the students a new field of knowledge on CICT itself, from how it started, what it used to be, who the staffs are, and also what kinds of equipment or computer hardware which are stored within the building.

NALI stand for New Academia Learning Innovation which focus on exhibiting new way of learning system developed mostly by the student of UTM and others outside participants. The innovation here mostly dedicated to change the old way of teaching to a newer and better to make sure the students to have a better quality learning sessions and able to satisfy the new learning concepts introduced by KPM in 2015 which is STEM. Most of them are trying to adapt and compete with other top universities worldwide that had long developed and implemented various of techniques to enhance their teaching skills. There are about 100 booths opened up during the event and we managed to visit three of them which is, Drop of Light booth, InMotion Concept Booth and Coolverter Booth.

REFLECTIONS

Many students rely on loans to get them through college. Yet, sometimes students borrow too much money while in school. Excess loan money leads to debt that students must pay back after graduation delaying other financial goals. With the proper educational support about living independently, students can reduce their chance of obtaining unnecessary debt from educational loans. Young adults generally learn their skills from parents and teachers as children. However, parents often overlook teaching financial skills, such as budgeting and investing, while their children are still living at home. Instead, children are forced to learn how to handle their money when entering college and sometimes they make mistakes that will cost them several years of repayment of loans. This study examines whether did RM application contributes in solving financial problems students face.

First of all, poor financial management is the main cause students are facing financial problem. For majority students, it is the first time they have experienced financial independence without parent’s supervision. They fail to do the management and flow of the money. They do not have the skill to manage their own money. They do not ensure that money is well spent and not misused. These problems are common among students attempting to balance small budgets with living expenses. Some students are not mature enough to handle finances and they overspend. Poor financial management also happened when students do not have discipline in their budgeting and spending money. Some student  likes to buy things without considered about the prices. Which mean student do not make the best buy that can help student spend less money. Besides, although students have tights budget, but they tend for living financially. For example, students that like to go to bars, partying and even go to the pubs. They do not really plan the future used of the money.

REFLECTIONS

Design Thinking is assigned as the students project assignment that requires the students to pour in their brainstorming ideas which are formed due to the problems that are usually faced by people, which are very very crucial in terms of being an entrepreneur.

IOT Talk

On 18 of November 2018, Industrial talks were arranged by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at lecture room 221-01, block P03, Faculty of Electrical Engineering. 4 Speakers were invited by the organiser to give industrial talks with the purpose of inspiring the final year students on what they’re going to do after they graduate, it turns out most of the audience that came on that day are from the School of Computing.

These Computer Science students including myself came under the instruction of each of our own  TIS (Technology and Information System) lecturers. We were told to write a report about the lecture which is the one I’m writing now.

There were 4 lectures started from 11:00 to 16:00, each lecture covered for an hour. And each lectures were brought by 4 different speakers.

Unfortunately, me and my classmates have to attend a class at 14:00, for which is the cause on why I could only report on the first 2 lectures.

REFLECTIONS

This industrial talk leads the students towards a leap for knowledge of industrial revolutions, which is arguably one of the most crucial knowledge to be prepared before entering the work field.

Senai Visit

On December 3rd, 2018 SCSR first year students from Technology and Information System Section - 08 made a visit to Senai International Airport to learn on how does the IT department apply their computer knowledge towards the airport system. This visit was conducted by Technology and Information System Section - 08’s lecturer, Dr. Azurah. The students departed at 02.00 P.M. from the bus stop in front of C.I.C.T. UTM Skudai by bus, and arrived around 02.30 P.M. local time. Upon arrival the students were greeted with a warm welcome by the airport officer and were escorted to a meeting room for a brief explanation on how the airport system works.

Inside of the meeting room the students were welcomed by Ms. Fathin, the airport officer that were responsible for guiding the students through the visit at the airport. Soon after that the students were greeted with Ms. Mazwa, from the IT department of Senai Airport who already actively working for 4 years and also graduated from UTM 4 years ago.

Ms. Mazwa told the students about Senai Airport’s software system, like the baggaging system, the passenger counter system, and also the gate calling system. And also she told the students about the airport’s networking system, like the wifi distribution throughout the airport building, the firewall system, and also the communication system.

REFLECTIONS

The visit gave a lot of knowledge towards the implementation of computer knowledge to the field of work which is where university students are prepared for. these knowledge are crucial due to the fact that it is within the course's work field.

Industrial Talk GLOW

An Industrial talk was organized by the faculty of computing in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Monday, 24 September 2018 at Seminar Hall – N28a. the speaker was a UiTM alumni, her name is Cik Noorashikin Halil.

Before she started the industrial talk, she mentioned a few of successful businessmen, like;

  • Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and co-founder of Facebook,

  • Jack Ma, the co-founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group,

  • Brian Chesky, the co-founder of Airbnb

She told us that all of those people have the same thing in common, all of them are making their own platforms which are in the form of virtual platforms to start up their businesses, unlike many other businessmen who buy available platform that are physically visible and are expensive to start their company. These platforms provide a lot of working space for those who are unemployed.

Why did she mention about this?

Because, she tried to imply that to earn money, you don’t have to have a “real” job, or if you want to start a company you don’t have to give a lot of money away for it, and also if you have a “real” job, you won’t have a lot of time to rest or even be happy.

After she told us about those successful men, she then told us about an organization that covers up most of the freelancers in malaysia called GLOW.

REFLECTIONS

This industrial talk has a lot of upsides towards university students, because it opens up an option for finding money in an easy way for these students.
