The UTM library organized a User Education Webinar with Language Academy on March 28, 2021, led by Dr. Haliza Zainal. starting at 10:00 am via Webex, the program emphasized graduate attributes such as adaptability and critical thinking skills. Its primary aim was to equip students with the ability to discern reliable sources beyond typical Google searches, given that many results lack proper citations. This skill is crucial for undergraduates, especially during thesis work, to accurately utilize available resources and cite them appropriately.
The webinar provided insights on enhancing information-gathering skills and navigating online databases on UTM Library, Endnote, and Turnitin. It commenced with an overview of the UTM Library, its vision, mission, and goals, followed by an introduction to the organizational structure and locations of various UTM Library branches. Dr. Haliza demonstrated the process of creating a library account and highlighted its functionalities. Additionally, tips on effective resource discovery were shared, along with explanations of applications like Turnitin and Endnote.
The webinar concluded with a group photo session on Webex at the end. Participants expressed benefits from gaining a deeper understanding of utilizing online databases and accessing information with credible sources. This experience significantly enhanced their information acquisition skills.
Self Reflection
This webinar was a great eye-opener for me. As a software engineer, I have once learned that the trait of a good engineer is getting good at learning how to learn, this webinar unlocks the path of learning advanced materials through the use of resources by UTM like the online library, proxy VPN system, and external partner library.
I also just realized after attending this webinar I became more active in trying to browse for topics I find interesting rather than just being a passing thought. This webinar became immediately useful as I was tasked to make thesis reports and papers using proper references that semester. This webinar also taught us about the finishing touches in making a paper namely using Turnitin to check for plagiarism and how to cite references properly and neatly. Thanks to the UTM library I have been opened a facet of knowledge previously unknown to me.
