In Principle Of Chemical Engineering Process or we call it mass balance, there are 7 topic that we need to learn and understand.
First topic of part one is Introduction to engineering calculations, second is process and process variables, the third is fundamental of material balance. These three topic we had learnt in semester one of our first year. These thre topic telll us about conversion unit, force and weight, mass and volume, flow rate, chemical composition, pressure and temperature. All these are basic in the chemical engineering course.
In part two, there are 3 topics.
Topic 4:
Fundamentals of material balance.
in this topic, we were taught about process classification, balance, material balance calculation, balance on multiple unit proces, reycle and bypass, chemical reaction stoichemistry, balance on reactive process and combustion. The learning outcome for this topic are:
- briefly and clearly explain the meaning of terms learnt such as batch process, transient, ourge and many more.
- draw and label flowchart, perform the degree of freedom, write the equation would use to calculate specified process variables and perform calculation.
- calculation in combustion process.
Topic 5:
Single Phase System.
There are 4 sub-topic in this topic,
- liquid and solid densities.
- ideal gas.
- standard temperature and pressure.
- idal gas mixture.
- equation of state for nonideal gas.
- the compressibility factor equation of state.
Learning outcome for this topic:
- explain about the term equation of state, mean of ideal gas behavior, standard temperature and pressure (STP), partial pressure, compressibility factor, critical temperature and critical pressure.
- using the ideal gas equation of state PV=nRT.
- calculate ideal gas equation of state by using standard condition.
- ideal gas mixture, knowing the partial pressure.
- using the equation of state for non-ideal gases by using critical temperature and critical pressure.
- find the value of z as compressibility factor in compressibility factor equation of state and chart or graph.
- using kay's rule for nonideal gas mixture.
Topic 6:
Multi Phase Systems.
Subtopic are:
- single component phase equilibrium.
- the gibbs phase rule.
- gas liquid system: one condensable component.
- multi component gas liquid system.
Learning outcome:
- sketch phase diagram for single speies.
- used the phase diagram to define: vapor pressure at specified temperature, boiling point at specified temperature, normal boiling point, melting point, sublimation point, tripple point, critical temperature and critical pressure.
- estimate the vapor presure of a pure substance at a specified temperature by using Classius-Clapeyron equation.
- using the Antoine equation, the Classius-Clapeyron equation and table B.3.
- use Raoult's Law.
- use Henry's Law.
- explain the term bubble point and dew point.
Part 3, energy Balance.
Topic 7:
Energy Balance for closed and Open Systems.
subtopic:
- concept of conservation of energy.
- energy balance for closed system.
- energy balance for open system.
- genereal procedure for energy balance.
- thermodynamics properties tables.
The learning outcomes are:
- calculate the kinetic energy, potential energy and internal energy.
- defined the terms closed process system, open process system, isothermal processand adiabatic procss.
- use the first law ogf thermodynamics or energy balance equation for closed and open process system.
- define term flow work, shaft work, specific internal energy, specific volume and specific entalphy.
- use Bernoulli's equatuon.
Principles of Chemical Processes 1 (SKKK1113) is the course that introduces me to the chemical engineering profession. This subject also provides the basic principles of chemical engineering material balances. In my first lecture of this subject, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramli had introduced me and my classmates about this subject. He said that before this, Principles of Chemical Processes 1 is known as a Mass Balance subject and according to him this subject is quite tough. He said based on his experience, it is hard for a student to get an A in this subject. However, it does not make me down and even I feel so curious. I really want to know what this subject is all about.
These are topics that we learn in this subject:
- Introduction to Engineering Calculations
- Process and Process Variables
- Fundamental of Material Balances
- Material Balances on Reactive Processes
- Single Phase Systems
- Multi-Phase Systems
- Energy Balance for Closed and Open Systems
In topic 1 we learnt about unit conversion which is the most important basic that everyone who taking this subject. Other than that, we need to have a basis based on the information given before we start the calculation. The new thing that we learnt is when we had solve our problem we need to box the numerical answer with its unit. Topic 2 introduces me about mass and volume, its flow rates and chemical composition and in topic 3 we learnt about material balances. This is the new things to me and it seems to be very interesting. In this topic we learnt about process classification, material balances which is on single or multiple unit processes and recycle and bypass. Dr. Ramli had teach us on how to draw a flow chart diagram which is represent the process and process equipment in chemical industry. He helps me a lot and guides me and my friend to draw a correct flow chart.
In topic 4, we still learnt about material balance but at this time we learnt how to calculate the material balance on reactive processes. The new thing that I had learnt in this topic is purging. Then, then next topic is single phase systems and multi-phase system. In these topic the most important thing is to know how to apply ideal gas formula which is PV=nRT. In this topic we also had learnt on non-ideal gases and how to solve the problem. we learn more on the Gibbs Phase rule, how to solve one condensable component by using Raoult’s law. Other than this, the term for superheated condition, dew point and degree of superheat are introduced to us. The last topic of our syllabus is energy balance. In this topic, Dr. Ramli introduced us on the conservation of energy, the energy balances for closed and open system and he guides us to use the thermodynamics property tables.
For this subject, there are three tests along our learning process which is Test 1, Test 2 and Test 3.
Test 1 : 22 March 2012
Test 2 : 19 April 2012
Test 3 : 22 May 2012
As I remember, before he starts his teaching on our first lecture Dr Ramli will ask us whether if there anything that we do not understand. This is his way on teaching us. He wants us to always remember what we had studied before and always make a revision before entering his class. Other than that, he always provides us a lot of exercise in order to help us familiar with examination’s question and help us to get understand more on what he had already teach.
Yes I admit that it is tough just like what Dr Ramli said in our first lecture. For this subject, student needs to have a higher level of understanding on chemical process. However, I love this subject because it is actually enjoyable. I feel so lucky because I have a lecturer like Dr Ramli who is actually really take care of his student. He always taking care of us likes our father. When we are not finishing our task and assignments, he scolds us which are actually good to us because it show that he is care about us and his advices are helping me to be a better student.
