MABEL PHANG YIK WEI's Reflection

For my 12-week of MJIIT local industrial training, I chose to do it with Southern Lion Sdn. Bhd. at Johor Bahru, Johor starting from 10th June to 30th August 2019.

Southern Lion Sdn. Bhd. (SLion) is a manufacturing company with two factories based in the production of liquid and powdered detergent, body shower foams and liquid handwash. The finished goods produced here in SLion are under the brand name Top, Senang, Puteri Emas, Bio Zip and Shokubutsu. Emeron, Systema, Fresh & White, Kodomo and Zact are also other brand name of products from other countries such as Indonesia and China under Lion Corporation Japan (LCJ). All the goods are certified Halal and produced through Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) under the Environmental Management System ISO 14001 and Quality Management System ISO 9001. SLion has a total of 18 departments, in which I was placed under the Process Engineering Department (PED) led by the Mr. Tee Kian Meng, Head of Department (HOD) and my supervisor, Mr. Fauzi Ahmad, assistant HOD. PED's core are on the servicing and maintenance of production machines, performing calibration, renewing of all machinery licenses with Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), and etc.

My training here in SLion included a number of briefings, tasks, and a project.
- SLion Safety Familiarisation Program
- Good Distribution Practice (GDP) briefing on guidelines and audit by National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA)
- Renewal of Fire Certification (FC)
- Participation in the improvement of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system and stacks with a consultation company
- Delivering of morning safety briefing on Heat Stress
- Participation in the regular inspection of High Tension (HT) installation by supervising engineer (competent person) to the Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga)
- Analysis on the plants' preventive maintenance and mechanical parts replacement records of year 2014-2019 using Microsoft Excel
- Analysis on operating hours of filling lines for higher effectiveness in preventive maintenance
- Participation in regular inspection of Scheduled Wastes (SW) weekly
- Site visit to chemical plants involving sulphonation, drying, and liquid mixing
Along my training period, I realized that observation and analysis are the main elements to find out the root cause of a problem. It is not only for my project but also for daily activities. For my project, I analysed past machinery records along with the total monthly and yearly operation hours, to determine the trend to sort out the repetitive problems. It indirectly helps me to learn independently, discipline myself, be considerate/patient, self-trust, take initiative and be able to solve problems. Besides, my communication skill is strengthened as well when communicating with others. During my training period, I have received criticism and advice from engineers and technicians when mistakes were made. I truly appreciate them for both personal and professional growth in this engineering field. Several important aspects which I have learnt are as below:
- critical and analytical thinking
- proper time management and work arrangement
- goal management
- colleague interactions
I truly thank SLion for having me these 12 weeks for the great exposure in forming good working ethics of a fresh graduate and deepening the knowledge on the legal matters needed in ensuring the smooth run of a manufacturing company.
Thank you, SLion and MJIIT for the golden opportunity!
