MINI REPORT

The 2nd Malaysia-China Intervarsity Chinese Debate Competition is a debate competition organized by Segi University, Malaysia, and Hainan Normal University. In 2021, SEGi University, Malaysia invited universities from all over Malaysia and China to participate in this event. It aims to strengthen the exchange between Malaysian and Chinese youths and to continue to promote traditional culture and the pursuit of truth.

This competition was held through the online platform VOOV meeting as it involves competitors from China. Since this competition includes the first half of the preliminary round, the second half of the preliminary round, and the final round, thus this competition took more than one month to complete.

At the same time, this competition also aims to encourage everyone to think about certain important issues such as natural disasters happening all around the world and whether should we take academics as the most important thing in our life. Thus, this competition emphasizes participants to think and discuss about the issues.

SELF-REFLECTION

In this competition, I participated as a debater. To compete with other teams, being fully prepared was important as my teammates and I were still debaters that lack experienced. Thus, we spend a lot of time discussing and preparing for the topic that we need to debate on.

During the preparation for the competition, I learned a lot of new knowledge about the issues such as natural disasters and academic issues because as a debater we will need to read a lot of materials to get the data that is useful for us in the competition. I also need to think about why we need to debate this issue, how we defend our topic, and what will be debated during the competition.  It was tiring as we almost have a discussion every night to make sure that we are fully prepared.

At the same time, I have learned that communication is important as all of us may have different ideas on the topics and It is important to communicate and combined all the ideas together.

I am very grateful that I have the opportunity to join this competition as a participant as I learned lots of things, especially improving my thinking skills, communication skills, leadership, and teamworking throughout the event. It is also a special experience as It does not always have the chance to compete with the debaters overseas. It is a great experience for me and I have learned many new knowledge.
