For me, this was the best experience I've ever had. My internship at Oleon Sdn. Bhd has taught me more than I could have imagined. COMPANY BACKGROUND

In Oleon, Pulau Indah, it was divided into three phases; Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3 (Unioleon but now has merged became Oleon). I am responsible for Phase 3 in production team.

Phase 3's is a food emulsifier plant in Pulau Indah, Malaysia where it is producing food oleo-derivatives. The application and use of these products within the food segment ranged from the bakery, the dairy to the confectionery industries. A dedicated applications lab is created in order to enhance the development of food emulsifiers.

The head office of Oleon is located in Ertvelde near Ghent (Belgium). We have two production sites in Belgium (Ertvelde and Oelegem), one in Germany (Emmerich), one in Compiègne (France) and one in Port Klang (Malaysia). Because of the favorable location of our plants, various transportation possibilities across land and sea are at our disposal: Oleon buys raw materials from all over the world and its end products are exported to more than 100 countries.

Main raw materials used in Phase 3 are HPST (Hydrogenated Palm Stearate), HPO (Hydrogenated Palm Oil), HSO (Hydrogenated Sunflower Oil) and Glycerin.

PERSONAL OPINION ABOUT THIS INTERNSHIP

On 9th October, I finished my internship at Oleon Sdn. Bhd. As an industrial trainee, the internship has exposed me a lot of unexpected precious experiences which I found quite interesting. Many new skills were learnt. This was my first taste of the real-life world and I did not know what to expect. However, my colleagues were extremely helpful and approachable, which made me feel comfortable working at Oleon Sdn. Bhd. From my supervisor, production engineer, intern, technician and contract worker, they were really making me happier to work here. Although it was only a short three months, I have learnt a lot from this experience as a production intern.

The internship was beneficial to me for a number of reasons. To begin with, I learned basic responsibilities of a job such as being on time, keeping a near perfect attendance record, and knowing that if I did not finish my work there were real consequences (instead of possible extensions for assignments). I learned to be my own boss because my supervisor would not stand over my shoulders all day; the responsibility was now on my shoulders. This was very different from completing assignments for classes in college because in college you get a syllabus, you have friendly reminders from your professor and classmates, and you are generally given extra time if something comes up. In the internship, I got a little taste of how that all ends when you get a real job; everyone expects you to be an adult by then and delegate your time properly. Time management is a necessary skill that develops through internships.

Apart from work, Oleon Sdn. Bhd conducted a sport event every month which allowed colleagues to bond and get to know one another better. For example, Bowling Competition on 22 August from all departments participated and had an enjoyable morning at the bowling alley. These events have allowed me to forge valuable friendships with my colleagues, which I will treasure. Unfortunately, I am sad because I cannot join the Go Cart game for next month as I have finished my internship at that time.

Oleon Sdn. Bhd will always have a special place in my heart and I am considered to apply for work when I have settled my degree next year.

Also, I never let go the chances to go to plant area every day to do line tracing, to learn more about the process, did an inspection and much more. These opportunities had me to apply my knowledge learnt in lecture bringing me sense of fulfilment.

The internship also allows me to work with colleagues with different backgrounds helping me to broaden my eyesight and gain insightful opinions from them during our conversations. These suggestions definitely benefit me on my future studies and work, developing a better version of me.

I could proudly say that I want to be a Production Engineer after I graduated.

Remarks

I cannot share a lot of pictures/document I did during the internship as it is really confidential to the company.

WEEK 1 - WEEK 4

Week 1 were fulled with training such as General Process Training, Food Defense, and Legal Requirement training and Noise REV. All these training were organized by Human Resources (HR) department. Then, I learned the whole process of phase 3 including understand it from P&ID. The P&ID is really hard for me to understand compared to what I learned during 3rd year of study. There were a lot of pipeline and all of it related with each other. But, I seek help from fellow intern and others to make me more understand it.

Then, I learned about the spray cooling plant process to make powder from ester produced. It was really fun because I have learned some basic fundamentals related to spray cooling plant process before starting my internship.

My supervisor was a busy person but he always to find some time for us every day even though it is only 5 minutes. I was glad to meet him for this internship. He also teached me how to make a report when the is a problem in production area. Actually, it was really an easy report with simple explanations.

These 4 weeks I occupied it to understand all the process in phase 3 from the beginning until packaging area.

WEEK 5 - WEEK 8

The most and exciting week for me. I involved in a project regarding lumping powder issues. Some of the powder produced became lump and we need post treatment. There were a lot of reasons it became lump such as the surrounding weather. We tried to use lump breaker in a cold condition to crush all the powder. Unfortunately, the powder lump back and became wet. Therefore, we make a meeting to discuss future in order to solve this matter.

The powder became lump after a week we did post treatment using lump breaker

I also went to plant production area every day to do line tracing for every area. It is really challenges because it is not easy to trace the line from this process to another process. But it was a great experience. I did line tracing with Haziq. Besides, I also did some documentations regarding the production department.

WEEK 9 - WEEK 12

I fully utilized these 4 weeks with improving my documentation skills. Me and haziq did a production notes for phase 3 from IE plant to spray cooling plant. Besides, I also did a lot of project charter for next year project. I did enjoyed doing report for inspection such as tracing the leaking of steam header, pest control and so on.
