SECI2143-10 PROBABILITY & STATISTICAL DATA ANALYSIS

PSDA Project 2

Introduction

Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) which is also called coronary heart disease, is the number one killer in Malaysia. “Ischaemic” means insufficient blood supply to human tissue or organ. IHD is the disease that occurs when the heart of the patient does not receive enough blood and oxygen. The patient with Ischaemic heart disease may experience shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, and so on. Unfortunately, some people with Ischaemic heart disease have no symptoms at all and it will lead to severe heart damage. This results in a high percentage of deaths due to Ischaemic heart disease as they are not aware of it and it is too late for them to undergo treatment.

The bad lifestyle such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, obesity, and so on results in a high percentage of deaths caused by Ischaemic heart disease. According to the research by National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA states that there is a relationship between increasing age and the Ischaemic heart disease risk (Finegold, Asaria and Francis, 2013). The research found out that people aged 65 and above probably suffer more from coronary heart disease compared to younger people. Besides, a comparative study of “Urbanization and Coronary Heart Disease” published in the “Indian Heart Journal” states that the prevalence of coronary heart disease is higher in urban populations compared to the rural population (Kumar R and Singh MC,2006).

Reflection

In this project, we are required to find secondary data to carry out with inferential statistics. The process of finding suitable secondary data for my case study is the most challenging part for me. I felt frustrated as I have no ideas with the topic for my case study. After researching online, I found out that Ischaemic Heart Disease is the top in the percentage of deaths in Malaysia. An idea comes across my mind that I should do some researches to know more about it.

After deciding the topic, I complete the proposal for this case study. In the proposal part, we need to describe the dataset that we selected, the purpose of this case study, and the potential variables that will be selected for analysis. This process enables us to understand more about the topic of our case study. We need to read the related articles, research, and journal to our case study as well as study well about the background of our case study before conduct a survey. It is because we must have good knowledge of the topic that we want to focus on. It helps us to carry out our project smoothly and achieve the objectives of our project. In the analysis part, I decided to investigate the relationship on the percentage of deaths due to Ischaemic heart diseases with different factors such as gender, age, ethnic groups. As we need to do all the analysis by using R studio, I also do some research online to learn the steps of carrying out inferential statistics by using R studio. I felt fortunate as technology nowadays enable me to learn useful knowledge easier.

By the assistance of lecturer, friends, and the online resources, I enable to complete my project on time. I felt appreciate to those who helping me in completing this project. By completing this project, it helps me to improve my knowledge about Ischaemic heart disease. Prevention better than cure, people nowadays should aware of the risk of Ischaemic heart disease in their daily life and practice a healthy lifestyle to prevent the epidemic of Ischaemic heart disease.

Conclusion

In this project, from the data collected by the departments concerned and the hypothesis testing of the percentage of deaths due to Ischaemic heart disease, it shows a trend of increase in the percentage of deaths due to IHD. It also contributes to the highest percentage of mortality from the total deaths. Besides, the relationship between the percentage of deaths and the old-age dependency ratio shows the prevalence of IHD is higher among the old age population.  According to the words of former Malaysian Paediatric Association president Dr. Thiyagar Nadarajaw, he said a healthy lifestyle should be nurtured from young to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases (IHD is included in non-communicable disease) (New Straits Times, 2020). Prevention better than cure, people nowadays should aware of the risk of Ischaemic heart disease in their daily life and practice a healthy lifestyle to prevent the epidemic of Ischaemic heart disease.
