UKQF2012-DIGITAL MEDIA

This is the portfolio for Digital Media, i will share the reflection, and also some of my experience in this page

Introduction

The field of Digital Media & Community explores how digital media can be integrated with communities to enhance engagement and communication. Digital media includes various electronic formats for conveying information, such as images, videos, blogs, social media, and messaging apps. This allows for more efficient and effective communication, regardless of physical location, as digital media provides a platform for multimedia content. The study of Digital Media & Community focuses on using digital media as a tool to impact and engage target audiences.

UKQF2012-DIGITAL MEDIA REFLECTION

Before

We were tasked with organizing an event as part of our course, which involved a sharing session with the younger generation outside of campus. To ensure the event ran smoothly, we had numerous meetings with our teammates where we discussed various ideas and ultimately decided on the schedule, food, transportation, and budget. This course has been an interesting experience, as it not only helped me to relax and reduce stress compared to other classes, but also taught me new knowledge that I wouldn't have been exposed to in my main course. Previously, I learned the importance of separating tasks and not trying to do everything alone. In this event, my task was managing the food, which included contacting the seller, collecting the food, and distributing it during the event. While preparing for the event, I realized that I had poor communication skills and tended to become nervous when speaking in front of others. Based on this experience, I plan to improve my communication skills by communicating more frequently with my teammates and classmates and being more mindful of preventing misunderstandings while communicating with the food seller.

A few days before the event, I went with one of my group mates to a snack shop to purchase snacks for our members and hampers as prizes for our participants. The shop was located quite far from my dormitory and it was hot to walk there, so I took the bus to get there. I was surprised to find out that each hamper cost RM35, I did not expect it to be so expensive. But, since we needed them for our participants, we decided to buy them anyway.

During

On that day, I was quite exhausted as I had to prepare a lot of things during the previous night for the event. Before heading to Dusun Tua, we all gathered at the lobby of MJIIT to ensure that everything was prepared, and everyone was present. At around 8:30 a.m. we moved all the things we prepared into the bus, and we departed from MJIIT. I am quite excited because this is my first time holding an event outside of the campus, I can’t wait to see the participants reaction during the event. When we arrived at Dusun Tua, we set up everything. I helped arrange the chairs and set up the treasure hunt. In our planning during the preparation for the event, the treasure hunt was an outdoor game, so we had to set up the stations under the scorching sun. It was really hot. After helping the other group set up the treasure hunt station, the food we ordered arrived. As part of my role in the event, I was in charge of dealing with the food vendor, ordering and separating the food. So, when the food arrived, I arranged it properly on the table to make it easier for our members to take it. The breakfast that day was bihun goreng, but it wasn't as tasty as I had expected. After eating breakfast, we started our event. The participants were divided into 3 groups based on their age. Our group, Group 1, was in charge of handling the secondary school participants. For our group, we didn't do any games or treasure hunts, instead, we gave a talk about computer science. I believe that it's the right time for secondary school students to think about the path they want to take after graduation. It's a hard decision for students, as I struggled with the same thing after finishing secondary school. So I think they need to prepare for their future earlier to ensure they are on the correct path. During the talk, we included a quiz for the participants and conducted pre and post surveys. Two members of our group, ADAM and IFFA, gave the talk to the participants. As my task was to handle the food during the event, I didn't have much to do during the talk. However, I helped my group members take pictures of the talk, so as not to interrupt them while they were giving the presentation. Actually, I’m so jealous when I see them can talk so good in front of so many people, and I think I cannot do that. After the talk, we had a sharing session where the participants were divided into 3 groups. We shared our experiences of university life with them and they asked questions such as "What programming languages did you learn?" and "Is the course you took hard for you?". Not all of them were interested in computer science, some were interested in chemical engineering and others in biotechnology. Even though they may not have been interested in the content of the talk, I was happy for them because they already had an idea about their future. They asked more questions about other courses and we explained and searched for information about those courses. If the course is offered by UTM we recommended them to join UTM. After finishing all the activities, we had a prize-giving session and a photo-shooting session. At the same time, our lunch arrived, I took charge of the food and arranged them on the table, just like I did in the morning, so that our members could eat directly after finishing their activities. Even though the breakfast wasn't good, the lunch was actually tasty. Our lunch was chicken rice and the fried chicken was delicious, I was surprised with the taste. Despite being tasty, we still had a lot of food left, so I decided to give it to some of our participants as some of them had already left. After that, I helped them to clean up the hall we used. Still, there were some food left, I took it back and put it in our hostel canteen so that anyone who wanted to eat could take it for free After the event, I felt very tired but I was very happy because I had the opportunity to participate in this event as one of the event organizers. I hope that our participants will choose the best path for their future after our talk. Although we were very busy during the preparation of the event, I think it was worth it.

After

After the event, I realized that we finished the event 2-3 hour before if compared to the time we planned. To ensure a more successful event in the future, we should adhere closely to the schedule planned during preparation. We also got a lot of things that need to improve because some of the participants did not come to the event.

Few days after the event, we’ve been asked to come out with financial report, my room mate is treasurer of that event, so sometime I will help him with the financial report, I help him to paste all the receipt on paper, but due to my mistake, accidentally left 2-3 receipt on my table. After that treasurer submits the financial report to the I- League, but unfortunately, the staff of I-League say that our expenses don’t match our financial report, so we need to find the missing receipt again. Luckily, we found that on my table, so next time I need to be more careful and check all the thing before done. Because of my mistake my friend need to go I-League once to submit the financial report. I really felt sad about that.

Other than report, we also asked to do a report for the whole event, we need to include all activities details in the report, for me I help to do my own group part such as introduction and put some image for it. I didn’t do the details part because ADAM and IFFA do that because they are the twos that giving the talk during the event so of course they know more about the activity than me. The report is quite a lot because our lecturer needs us to make it at least 50 page and also we face a lot of difficulties when we doing the report. But we finally overcame the difficulty after a few face-to-face meetings with our lecturer. Lecturers help us to state out what part we got wrong.

Background

The Digital Media & Community course at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) requires students to conduct an activity in a community related to digital media. To maximize impact, the class chose a rural community instead of nearby urban areas. The course, taught by Dr Sahnius, began in September 2021 and has 32 students. As the main project of the class, the community activity replaces traditional exams. To effectively engage more members of the community, the class was divided into three groups, each targeting a different group within the community: primary school students, secondary school students, and small business owners.

Community

The Dusun Tua community in Hulu Langat is a large, rural community consisting of individuals of various ages and occupations. The Digital Media & Community class at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has chosen this community as the focus of their program to introduce and educate them on digital media and technology. Although the community has some knowledge of digital technologies and gadgets, their remote location makes it difficult for them to have access to activities that focus on these contents.

The program was designed to have multiple activities so that different groups within the community can participate and benefit from it. The 40-minute bus ride from UTMKL to Dusun Tua was worth it for the class, as they saw the potential for a positive impact on the community through their program. The class's aim is to provide the community with exposure to digital media and technology, thereby improving their overall knowledge and understanding of these subjects.
