1) The internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use internet protocol suite to link devices worldwide. The internet began at 1969, when scientist Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) connected computer networks at the University of California and Stanford Research Institute. Internet's most common uses is E-mail, research, downloading files, Interactive games and many more. Activities that I have participated on the internet is online social networks because it is easier to keep up with my friends that lives far from me. I think the most popular internet uses is E-mail because everyone needs one to get a job, to communicate with others, to get notified by your favorite stores.
2) There are 2 method to connect to the internet using your PC. One is using wireless broadband, first you have to make sure the Wi-Fi connection is on. Then access your network settings and find the name of your Wi-Fi network. Next, enter the password of your internet connection and wait for it to connect. The second one is connect your ethernet cable from your modem to your computer. Example of internet provider in Malaysia is TM and TIME. Browsers is a programs that provide access to Web resources. Uniform Resource Locator (URL) has two parts protocol and domain. Browsers interpret HTML commands contained in a document. JavaScript is high level, interpreted programming language. Applets is a very small application, especially a utility program performing one or a few simple functions. Example of mobile browser is Safari and Opera mini.
3) Internet communication is referred to as the sharing of information, ideas or simply words over the internet. E-mail is the transmission of electronic messages over the internet. Instant messaging is the extension of e-mail that provides direct live communication between two or more people. Social networking is connecting people and organizations that share a common interest or activities. blogs is personal news pages that are date/time stamped and arranged with the most recent items shown first. Microblogs is a short status updates that answer the question. Webcast is a streaming technology for live broadcast of audio and video. Podcast is audio and video that can be downloaded to your computer or media player. Wiki is a specially designed web site that allows visitors to edit the contents and supports collaborative writing.
4) Search tools is a utilities available on the internet to help you find the information among millions of documents on the internet. Search engines is a specialized programs to assist in locating information. Web directories is an online list or catalog of websites. Metasearch engines is a search tool that uses another search engine's data to produce its own results from the internet. Specialized search engines index pages for particular topics only and very often there are many pages that cannot be found in general-purpose search engines but only in specialized tools.
5) Electronic commerce is buying and selling goods or transmitting funds and data over the internet. Business to consumers (B2C) refer to the transactions directly between a company and consumers who are the end products or services. Consumer to consumer (C2C) is the the business model between private individuals. Business to business (B2B) refers to commerce between two business. The payment methods of e-commerce must be fast, reliable and secure, there are three option which is checks, credit card and digital cash.
6) Cloud computing is the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the internet to store, manage and process data, rather than a local or personal computer. There are three types of cloud computing components which is clients (end-users), service providers, the internet. Clients are the device that the end user interact to manage their information cloud. Service providers are organizations with computers connected to the internet that are willing to provide access to software, data and storage.
7) Web utilities is a utility for device management that has been built in the machine. plug-ins is a programs that automatically start and operate as part of your browser. filter is a program to block access to specific web sites according to user's preferences. File transfer utilities is the transmission of a computer file through a communication channel from one computer system to another. Internet security suites is a collection of software utilities that protect a user's computer from viruses or malware.
REFLECTION
I learnt about the history of the internet and how it start and revolutionize to become this major platform for not only communication but so many other useful purposes. This chapter taught me what is a web, the function of it and the features that are within it.
