SERENE HOE's Reflection
From today lesson, I learn about that the personality is refers to a theatrical mask (reflects to our roles) worn by performers and also our identity which reflects our attitude and character. Personality is the characteristic pattern of the thoughts, feelings and behavior and make people different from each other. Other people will realize if we have a change in our characteristic pattern especially our parents because the pattern is consistent and repeated. Psychology cannot read the mind of people, but can interpret the pattern of people. People should reduce comparison and cannot too outrageous because it will make you suffer. We do not compare with other people if already have improvement on our result or other things. For example, you make the comparison with your friends and your friends get the good result buy you did not get and this will make you feel sad and want to give up. Personality can help to predict and explain a person’s behavior. I also understand that the study of personality focus on two which are understanding individual differences in personality characteristic and also understanding how the various parts of a person come together.
The idea of personality is use to explain the consistent of a person’s behavior and distinctive response or people to the same situation. So, personality refers to an individual’s unique constellation of consistent behavioral traits. In addition, I also learn about the factor contribute to the development of personality is your genetics, upbringing, and your life experience. Personality will impact how we view ourself and what our perspective about other and the world around us. The characteristic of personality is consistency (people act in the same way in different situation), behavior and actions ( influence our move, acting and cause us act in certain ways). The psychological and physiological is also another characteristic of personality but research also suggests the biological processes and needs. Multiple expressions can be seen through our thinking, feelings and social interactions. I know that there are some type theories related to biological influence such as type A ( like to compete, focus on career, easy stress), type B (low stress, adaptable to change), type C (perfectionists, conscientious) and also type D (feeling worry, lack of self confidence, hopeless).
Through today lesson, I learn about the ways to increase self esteem is need to realize our level of self esteem and be friend with positive people to help us think more positive. The another way is create positive environment around us through get some positive view from article or motivational talk. I learn about the new topic about self efficacy. Self efficacy refer to individual beliefs that he or she can do or cannot do about one task. It reflects confidence in the ability to control one’s own motivation, behavior, and social environment. Self efficacy is the belief that our ability to challenges ourself and completed the task. Factor influence self efficacy is from our experience, during from childhood time and environment. There are two types of self efficacy which is overall belief and specific forms (academic, parenting, sports). Belief determinants of how people think, behave and feel. High self efficacy is we know our weakness but give ourself opportunity to try it. For example, Aisyah is not well at subject Mathematics but she believe her ability and can learn it well.
In addition, I learn about the locus control that refers to believe the power to adapt your life within internal or external. For example, if you trust in your abilities and take an initiative to apply at various places, you have a strong internal locus of control. The effects of low self efficacy will make people believe that the task is hard to finish and giving up while the high self efficacy lead people to greater efforts. So the high self efficacy and low self efficacy need to moderate to make people become more better. I also understand well about the five main sources to increase self efficacy. The first one is mastery experience. It refers to gain experience, take new challenge and success and this can improve by practice. The second one is vicarious experience means that having a role model to observe and emulate. The another one is verbal persuasion and this refer to positive impact that our words especially for child. The fourth is emotional and physiological that refer to overall healthy and well being. When we are healthy in mind, emotion and physical, it will help us to increase the self efficacy. The last one is imaginal experiences or called visualization. This allow us to dream our success and help us build the belief of success.
From the third lesson, I learn about that what is the factors that shape the self concept. The first one is one’s own observations will affect the self concept. Individual begin defined themselves and make the conclusions. They will also compare with others to asses their abilities and opinions. The second factor is feedback from others such as friends, family members. We should start with encouragement feedback first and give some advise. The another factor is social context and we need to have interaction with society and we can received feedback from the community. Cultural value also affect our self concept. It make a difference how we view ourselves and others.
Besides that, I also learn about the self esteem it means feeling good about yourself. A person who have the good self esteem will feel proud and believe themselves while who have the bad self esteem will feed bad and think they not good. Self esteem in psychology describe a person overall sense of self worth and it seen as personally trait. Self esteem involve belief, emotions and behaviors. People with high self esteem will feel confident and taking credit for their success while people who low self esteem will feel more confused and tentative. Self esteem is important because play role in the motivation and success in our life. People who have low self esteem need to o some change to make yourself become more strong. When having a good self esteem, it will help us achieve our goals and make us become more positive.
From the second lesson, I learn about the self and it divided into two which is physical attributes and psychological characteristics. I think myself is a determined person. When I decided to do something, I will do my best and never give up. I also a hardworking person. If have some tasks or work that given, I will do it on that time and finish the task well. My personality is tend to passive and need more time to communicate and make friends with other people. There have three roles in psychological characteristics that have to be mention. The first is realize our weakness because if not will always happen quarrel. The second is manipulate our strength and overcomes our weakness. Then the third is do some improvements continuous.
Furthermore, I also understand well about the nature of self concept. Self concept is an organized collection of beliefs about the self. It entails our personality when we think about ourselves what we believe to be true about our self. In addition, I know that belief is develop from past experience and it also called self schemas. Belief is a change to do the adjustment and adaption to yourself but it is not easy. I also learn that the self discrepancy is the ideal and ought selves serves as personal standards or self guides that direct behavior. It consists of a mismatch between the self perceptions that make up the actual self, ideal self, and ought self.
Through the week 1 lesson, I have some basic understand about the subject Psychology of Adjustment. Psychology is a scientific study of the mind and behavior. It can help us know how to manipulate our mind. Three component of psychology is mind, behavior and feelings. The ways of thinking by human will affect their behavior. Mind is everything if we think to do best, we will give full effort to get goals. Our mind also contribute to our feelings such as happy, sad, excited and others. Professional psychologist cannot reach people's mind but can understand their mind by observing or communicate with them. Our father and mother can interpret what we are thinking about through observation.
Psychology come from physce (soul) and logos (doing research). Mind cannot be seen, but can seen through behavior. Behavior is window human mind and thinking. Psychology focus on behavior and related mental and physiological processes Mental process are more difficult than behavior because they are private and not directly observable. In order to fulfil our needs, we will face the challenges so we need to do some adjustment. At the Maslow Hierarchy of needs already show the five tier model of human's needs. In our life, the needs must be fulfil is food, water, clothing and others so do the adjustment will make our life become more better.
