It is compulsory for every MJIIT undergraduate student to undergo industrial training for 12 weeks period of time in order to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree. Starting from 11th June 2018 until 30th August 2018, I have done my industrial training at Panasonic Industrial Devices Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PIDMY) located in Shah Alam which is one of the Panasonic’s branches in Malaysia. PIDMY was built in December 1972 and is currently managing by Hiroshi Takahashi who is the managing director. Panasonic Industrial Devices Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PIDMY) is a premier manufacturer of high-quality electronic components such as variable resistor, switch, ultrasonic sensor and electrolytic capacitor for local electronic set manufacturers as well as the world market. I was attached to Capacitor Business Group Department which particularly focusing on the production of capacitors in Research and Development (R&D) activities. Under the supervision of Mr Hairunizam bin Minhaj who is the senior manager of the department as well as my company’s supervisor, I have successfully completed the 3 months of industrial training in PIDMY.
My job scope in Research and Development was to assist the engineers doing the testing on the capacitor for their projects which involved in cost saving in the production line. During my training, I have given a project to change the material used in the current capacitor such as aluminium foil and separator paper to a new material which is more quality. In this project, I was guided to do a few testings on the capacitor to approve the new material used in the capacitor so that it can be used in the production line. For example, I have done the life test to check the condition of the capacitor throughout the guaranteed life. Life test is one of the very crucial tests as it is important to check the characteristic of the capacitor such as capacitance, tangent of loss angle and leakage current as long as their weight and length dimension to meet the specification. Besides, as my department which is Research and Development (R&D) is relatable to the Quality Control (QC) department, I also in charge of analyzing the customer complains about the capacitor received. For example, the capacitor received had a high leakage current which this can affect the performance of the capacitor. Thus, I need to do the research on the problem to find the best solution for it.
I have gained much knowledge and experiences throughout my industrial training. Basically, this training served an exposure for me to the real working environment to prepare for my future career as a professional engineer. I able to develop skills in safety practices, work ethics, communication and time management. Apart from that, I also have given a chance to experience the community service that held by the headquarters of Panasonic in Malaysia which was a tree planting in Shah Alam. From this activity, I got a chance to meet new members from other Panasonic's branches which this experience really developed my soft skills, especially in communication.
