Report Activity 2
Efforts between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the Johor State Forestry Department (JPNJ) through the UTM-JPNJ Living Lab initiative have been strengthened in the Malaysian Greening Program "Greening the Earth, Together Resolve" in conjunction with the 100 million Tree Planting Campaign.
The activity of planting 300 mangrove saplings which was carried out on 20 December 2022 in Rambah Pontian, involved the participation of 50 UTM volunteers consisting of 5 staff from the Security Division, Registrar Department along with 45 students from the Bachelor of Geoinformatics Science, FABU including myself.
The implementation and active involvement of UTM volunteers through this program is expected to further increase the public's awareness, involvement and understanding in continuing green area preservation and conservation initiatives at the national level. The program is also run by other volunteer members on different days. I have taken a place as a participant in this program. A continuation of the program I have participated in, this program also focuses on large group activities that require comprehensive communication skills, thinking skills, teamwork skills and adaptability skills.
One of my lecturers has contacted us to invite us to participate in this program, because we already have some fundamentals that have been obtained from past activities. Since there was nothing stopping me, my friends and I participated in this activity. Adaptability is also the focus for me in this program. This is because the place I went to be a swamp, in all my life, I never set foot in a swamp with bare feet. Good communication is also the focus, this is because in order to run this program smoothly, good communication is very necessary because we have a short time and need to finish according to the schedule that has been set. Teamwork is very necessary at this time, because we need to bring a lot of mangrove trees to plant in the swamp filled with water. It really needs the help of the public so that the limited movement can be done well and smoothly.
I have found a big impact from this program among which is adaptability skills which, going to a mangrove swamp and going into the swamp itself is the first experience in my life, it needs support and high enthusiasm to adapt in a place that is well, thankfully I am surrounded by friends who are very sporty in this regard. In terms of teamwork, I and other friends have put together a strategy so that the trees on land can be delivered with the "pass" technique from the participants on land and those who have lined up form a long line so that the trees can arrive at the destination of the nursery. This is done so that we do not waste time and energy. The challenge I faced was the discomfort I felt when stepping on the swamp with barefoot, but it was successfully faced, and a few technical problems that in my opinion are not problems that cannot be solved, even if it can be done with everyone's cooperation.
