Malaysia’s 100 million tree greening campaign

On 29 March 2022, UTM-JPNJ organized a Tree Planting Program in conjunction with the 'Malaysia 100 million Trees Greening Campaign' which was held at Sireh Park Iskandar Puteri, Nusajaya with the presence of 136 volunteers consisting of staff and students.

With the support and cooperation of the Faculty of Architecture and Surveying (FABU), UTM Campus Sustainability (UTMCS), UTM Center for Community and Industry Network (UTMCCIN), Rahman Putra College Riverdale Club, Johor State Forestry Department, Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) and The Nusajaya Natural Heritage Trust, Sireh Park Iskandar Puteri, the Phase 1 campaign program organized by Living Lab UTM-Johor State Forestry Department (UTM-JPNJ) has successfully attracted many volunteers.

I have been assigned to be the secretariat for the campaign to launch this event again. This campaign aims to increase awareness, involvement and understanding of the public (especially the UTM community) about the role of everyone in the preservation and conservation of green areas. With the cooperation of government agencies that also bring their respective objectives.

My involvement is also closely related to the bachelor's field taken which is with the use of the GeoTrees application to record the number and development of trees planted by users. Cooperation between students and staff has shown a high degree of cooperation and awareness in doing joint activities. Especially in taking care of the environment which requires a great awareness not only of oneself but among the community. Communication skills can also be applied in this program where I am assigned to help the participants when they need help, especially to those with higher ranks and the elderly. The program started with a speech from the superiors and a planting gimmick then continued with the planting of trees around Sireh Park. Participants were divided into several groups and were taught about the use of the geotress application. When the ceremony was over, the participants were given a small gift from the responsible party as a token of thanks and a photo session.

The reflection that I was able to achieve in this program is that, to some extent, my communication skills have improved, in which I have started and am comfortable to communicate with the public, I learned to speak with a better vocabulary in dealing with problems. My thinking skills are also increasing a little to help me to do the right things and think quickly. Teamworking skills have also been acquired when I must deal with several people who are given joint responsibility. Throughout this program, I have made every effort to learn to adapt in a large and different group. All the challenges that have been faced such as technical problems have been dealt with well when I also help the participants plant trees. The skills acquired while growing up and the classes learned during school have helped me to some extent in carrying out the activities of this program very well.

There are various interesting activities that have been done throughout the program, the time taken to complete this event also takes a long time. A variety of interesting skills can be acquired and honed again during this program. Communication skills, thinking skills, Leadership and Teamworking skills and global citizenship acquired by this program.

I have taken responsibility as an active participant and become an usher on the closing day of the ceremony.

Throughout this event, the Group members and I have made a large prototype and attended discussions from time to time. The focus in this program is Communication skills, Thinking skills, Leadership and Teamworking skills and global citizenship. Discussion after discussion has reached the final word and made the program run smoothly, this shows the communication and cooperation between club members have agreed to achieve success. Idea after idea was thrown to the club members to achieve the goals of this program which finally gave excellent results and got recognition. Various activities have been carried out by club members after dividing their respective tasks together with the community. Among the activities carried out together with the Benut community is the joint effort to jointly clean up the playground area. On the last day, the closing ceremony for the Benut Laboratory Community Program was held which was also attended by Prof Dr Intan Zaurah and the highest individuals from the Benut side.

This program has brought a good reflection to me, it has a very big impact because it requires a very long process to run this program. The communication between the members of the Group improved greatly, I learned to accept and give opinions, I feel that if I do not have good communication, the results of the work done will not be produced well. I also gained experience when I became the person responsible for accompanying important people. Various challenges have been overcome when running this program, among them is that when doing prototypes, there are times when the original idea cannot be done, but it is overcome by discussing and often experimenting to get good work results. Another challenge for me is that I have never been an escort, let alone for those with a high rank, but it has been a relief for me when my instructors have given me instructions on how to carry out the task.

MALAYSIA'S GREENING PROGRAM AT THE PONTIAN DISTRICT LEVEL

Efforts between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the Johor State Forestry Department (JPNJ) through the UTM-JPNJ Living Lab initiative have been strengthened in the Malaysian Greening Program "Greening the Earth, Together Resolve" in conjunction with the 100 million Tree Planting Campaign.

The activity of planting 300 mangrove saplings which was carried out on 20 December 2022 in Rambah Pontian, involved the participation of 50 UTM volunteers consisting of 5 staff from the Security Division, Registrar Department along with 45 students from the Bachelor of Geoinformatics Science, FABU including myself.

The implementation and active involvement of UTM volunteers through this program is expected to further increase the public's awareness, involvement and understanding in continuing green area preservation and conservation initiatives at the national level. The program is also run by other volunteer members on different days. I have taken a place as a participant in this program. A continuation of the program I have participated in, this program also focuses on large group activities that require comprehensive communication skills, thinking skills, teamwork skills and adaptability skills.

One of my lecturers has contacted us to invite us to participate in this program, because we already have some fundamentals that have been obtained from past activities. Since there was nothing stopping me, my friends and I participated in this activity. Adaptability is also the focus for me in this program. This is because the place I went to be a swamp, in all my life, I never set foot in a swamp with bare feet. Good communication is also the focus, this is because in order to run this program smoothly, good communication is very necessary because we have a short time and need to finish according to the schedule that has been set. Teamwork is very necessary at this time, because we need to bring a lot of mangrove trees to plant in the swamp filled with water. It really needs the help of the public so that the limited movement can be done well and smoothly.

I have found a big impact from this program among which is adaptability skills which, going to a mangrove swamp and going into the swamp itself is the first experience in my life, it needs support and high enthusiasm to adapt in a place that is well, thankfully I am surrounded by friends who are very sporty in this regard. In terms of teamwork, I and other friends have put together a strategy so that the trees on land can be delivered with the "pass" technique from the participants on land and those who have lined up form a long line so that the trees can arrive at the destination of the nursery. This is done so that we do not waste time and energy. The challenge I faced was the discomfort I felt when stepping on the swamp with barefoot, but it was successfully faced, and a few technical problems that in my opinion are not problems that cannot be solved, even if it can be done with everyone's cooperation.

GEO-INSPIRE NATURE CAMP 2022 (GEOINC’22)

On 30 December and 31 December 2022, located at Tiger Base Camp Kota Tinggi, I participated in a camp that was conducted by the Geoinformatics club together with all students from Year 1 and Year 4. Also participating was a line of lecturers who teach this field.

The focus of this camp is to strengthen the relationship between students, improve thinking skills, communication skills, teamwork skills and adaptability. I myself have been one of the volunteers on the last day of the camp to clean the beach.

Communication between students is found to increase when there are several activities required to reach the end point. In addition to good communication skills, teamwork skills for each group are also of concern. To get a good score, all members of the Group must join hands and move precisely to win the competition. Activities carried out by this club also highlight thinking skills activities, where students need and can solve problems in a short time to move to another point. For those who do not usually attend the camp, it can add adaptability skills to those who will learn to adapt to attend the camp. The activities carried out also have a great impact, not to mention when awareness activities to protect the environment such as cleaning the beach are carried out. Students can feel and learn the importance of the environment for the near and future.

The result of this camp session, I found that the skills that have been mentioned increased. I became more courageous to approach people and chat with them. I feel that the members of my group have given energy and good cooperation, this is because my group has won third place from the whole group, it is proven that all the skills acquired have a great impact in this life. This camp to some extent has given space to all individuals to hone their skills that have been hidden for a long time. Challenges acquired During this camp, I hardly felt any because everyone around me often helped and gave words of encouragement to continue doing the activity until it ended. I admire the efforts made by the organizers
