Report Activity 1
On 29 March 2022, UTM-JPNJ organized a Tree Planting Program in conjunction with the 'Malaysia 100 million Trees Greening Campaign' which was held at Sireh Park Iskandar Puteri, Nusajaya with the presence of 136 volunteers consisting of staff and students.
With the support and cooperation of the Faculty of Architecture and Surveying (FABU), UTM Campus Sustainability (UTMCS), UTM Center for Community and Industry Network (UTMCCIN), Rahman Putra College Riverdale Club, Johor State Forestry Department, Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) and The Nusajaya Natural Heritage Trust, Sireh Park Iskandar Puteri, the Phase 1 campaign program organized by Living Lab UTM-Johor State Forestry Department (UTM-JPNJ) has successfully attracted many volunteers.
I have been assigned to be the secretariat for the campaign to launch this event again. This campaign aims to increase awareness, involvement and understanding of the public (especially the UTM community) about the role of everyone in the preservation and conservation of green areas. With the cooperation of government agencies that also bring their respective objectives.
My involvement is also closely related to the bachelor's field taken which is with the use of the GeoTrees application to record the number and development of trees planted by users. Cooperation between students and staff has shown a high degree of cooperation and awareness in doing joint activities. Especially in taking care of the environment which requires a great awareness not only of oneself but among the community. Communication skills can also be applied in this program where I am assigned to help the participants when they need help, especially to those with higher ranks and the elderly. The program started with a speech from the superiors and a planting gimmick then continued with the planting of trees around Sireh Park. Participants were divided into several groups and were taught about the use of the geotress application. When the ceremony was over, the participants were given a small gift from the responsible party as a token of thanks and a photo session.
The reflection that I was able to achieve in this program is that, to some extent, my communication skills have improved, in which I have started and am comfortable to communicate with the public, I learned to speak with a better vocabulary in dealing with problems. My thinking skills are also increasing a little to help me to do the right things and think quickly. Teamworking skills have also been acquired when I must deal with several people who are given joint responsibility. Throughout this program, I have made every effort to learn to adapt in a large and different group. All the challenges that have been faced such as technical problems have been dealt with well when I also help the participants plant trees. The skills acquired while growing up and the classes learned during school have helped me to some extent in carrying out the activities of this program very well.
