Reflection Report
Planning a music event such a large invitational track took a lot of resources, facilities and manpower. I had the change to join as a committee in “23rd Losting Music Convention” that organized by Losting Music Club UTM on 4 May 2019. I could still remember the challenges and excitements that as a chief facilitator in the event. The purpose of organising 23rd Losting Music Convention is to discover the talent in music and provided the chance for students to improve their leadership and teamwork through this event. Many clubs in UTM worked together to perform an interesting musical event that evening.
At the first stage of this event, I need to be interviewed by the committee in the club. The purpose of this interview was to show my ability for the post that I wanted to be and gave an opportunity for the interviewers to evaluate my capable aligned with the position. Although that was not a very formal interview, it helps me to have an experience when I going to have a job interview. This interview taught me about good manners and the ability to clearly articulate thoughts and ideas were important in a job interview. I need to be confident and make eye contact to the interviewers because it conveys honestly, trust, intent and likability during the interview. Even though I did not have the experience of being a chief facilitator, but I would try my best in this position. My core responsibilities were to carry out the instructions given by the team leader and cooperate with others on every stage of the event simulation planning.
There were a number of factors that need to be considered along the way and the event itself had a various impact on the society, culture and environment. However, this experience was immensely advantageous as it gave me a better understanding about the procedure of an event and the real-life drill of an event really helped me to realize that teamwork is important in a team and cooperate the tasks with others that were needed to make the musical event successfully. Although the team acted as a temporary organization, they also inspire me to work harder and better that took responsibilities of my role. We also can motivate each other to be more productive in creative thinking. This is when like I am working in a group for projects, I rely on my teammates by building trust, and establish a strong relationship with them. Despite unfrequented disagreements within members on projects, we enjoy working together and connects a strong bond. When there had trust in each other, the foundation of a relationship can reduce minor conflicts between each other.
Working groups of people, I found that it was very important to attend an event like such as a trusting group. I was not necessarily friends with everyone when I first entered to this committee, but I feel much closer to my teammates after we spent so much time working together. Everyone had each other’s backs and we never once lost when we faced problems. However, open communication with each other is the thing I always did in a group because it is working on a team and produces effective solutions in a difficult project. I will now be creating and maintaining open communication in the workplace by helping the company moves more quickly when opportunities arise.
Planning a musical event involved different aspects of the even including the financial planning, rules and regulations, possible impact on the student community, committee management, branding of the performers and sponsorship. Every committee had to join in the sponsorship trip in order to commit money from the enterprises for specific promotional benefits. In exchange for supporting the non-profit, these enterprises get their name and logo on our booklets. Through this sponsorship trip, I think having some good ways to attract sponsors are necessary. I need to set a unique selling proposition for the event like selling a product or service. Therefore, the faster way to demonstrate the value of what I can offer potential sponsors is through a proposal. When considering the sponsorship for any event, choosing a right sponsor is the priority so I need to learn how to analyse the demographic of the sponsor and consider my brand values before identifying sponsors that are a good fit. After having this experienced in this sponsorship trip, I realized that the skills I have acquired regarding event budgeting will particularly helpful in the future.
In my experience of working with the group within three months, I realized event planning and management always required many team efforts, regardless of the size or range of the event. Therefore, there had to be a committee of the team who plays the role of a leader to guide the knowledge and resources sharing process. I felt as a leader had to be influenced, motivate, communicate and energize the members to bring the best from them for improvement of the event entity. A good leader will promote a culture of cohesion and collaboration within the workplace. As a result of creating effective teams who are all driven to succeed, the productivity of the team will increase because when people feel working together in a shared goal, they will work harder. “As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others,” said Bill Gates. I really agree with him because an effective leader must be a strong coordinator that can engage the members at all steps of the scaling process and able to exhibit the capability of each member in order to increase the productivity. Hence, I realized the nature of the work of a leader and I am now more confident and capable to become a group leader for a project or in the workplace.
However, there were a few places where I identified a shortcoming in terms of my individual performance. First of all, I was assigned to be an assistant head of program unit that in-charged to write the script and teach performers acting on the stage. Due to I lacks knowledge in this field, therefore I had to learn from my leader. Although I prepared the script for opera and he will helped me change the script to become better. This reminds me that I should not be discouraged when people do not accept my ideas in the team. Vince Lombardi mentioned that “Winner never quit and quitters never win. ”, so I should never give up although the circumstance in my life makes me feel that despite all the hard work I’m doing. However, the challenges I faced along the way in this event were not meant to make me quit but just made me become more strong and confident to encounter any difficulties. When I look back at my experiences in this event, this will be the primary takeaway that I had learned how to write the script in a perfect way and facilitate ideas and knowledge for this musical event among the group members. I will be aware so applying my perseverance in my career path in the future and also help me become better as a social being and as an individual. It is the responsibility that I should not easily give up when facing some problems in the future.
I noticed all the performers were confidence to show themselves in public. This is because of their passionate brought them to be confident when faced a lot of people. They passion for the music, stage and the performance that helped them ignite passion and creativity in other areas their life. I believe that music was already becoming a part of their life. This reminds me of I do not have any passion in doing anything previously and I started to feel my life was monotonous and lonely. Luckily I found my passion in my life and I deeply wish to accomplish it. “Passion is energy. F Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you,” said Oprah Winfrey. Passionate in my life gives me relieve while doing what I feel so strongly about. Besides, I realize that driving force behind everything that I do is the extreme mean to my life that promises a better future. Now, everything I do is based on this simple thought. It has become a unique reason for my efforts and every accomplishment that takes me closer to my dream makes me more passionate about it and more interested. This is the way to bring me true joy and pleasure in my life.
However, this was a very enjoyable and valuable experience in my university’s life. This experience will add values to me as an individual and will help me to become a better person in future. The most significant values that I learn from this music event with LOSTING music club is being confidence on myself, teamwork and leadership are very necessary for a team, never give up when facing any problems and being passionate in my own life. This experience will remind me about the values of working in synergy to produce a positive result in my career path. For me, that was the most important of the whole experience.
