Digital Electronics (Group Assignment)

Description

Digital Electronic (SKEE 1223) is one of the course that i should take in my second semester in UTM. As a student of electrical engineering, it is obvious that we should master the most basic concept of electrical engineering in order to learn the more complicated one. For SKEE 1223, i had to learn about the basic of digital electronic like number system, digital logic, intergrated circuit, etc. UTM offers the best curriculum whose purpose is to help the students to understand more about the subject, not just theoritically, but also how it can be applied in the real life problem.

For Digital Electronic course, I registered myself in section 5 which overall has 24 students in it. My lecturer, Dr.Farabi, didn't just assign us with individual assignments, he also assign us with a group assignment. I remember that he certainly had mentioned about the group assignment in the beginning of the semester, but not specifically. He only asked us to vote in e-learning whether we want to form the group ourselves or he form it for us. Eventhough there were not so many people voting, the final result was the latter option. Each group consist of 3 members and is assigned with the same task. The task is to produce an Identity Card (IC) Number of the group leader by using Altera Quartus II Software. We should use only a 4:16 decoder (74154 chip) and 2-input Nand gates. We should also make a report and e-portofolio about the assignment. In total, there are 8 groups that is formed. And my group is group number 2.

At first, i was confused about how to solve this problem. Because i had no idea how to construct the truth table and produce 4 outputs with only one decoder. I thought it will need 4 decoders to solve this. After that, i got to meet up with my group members, Nabilah and Asraf. We discuss about the assignment, then downloaded the software. Finally in our first meeting, we decided to ask for a guidance from senior because we really had no idea how to get this done. In our second meeting, the senior taught us so many things like constructing the truth table, the basic tools of quartus and creating the waveform (timing diagram). I'm so glad that we were asking for her help. Not only she was so friendly, but she also did a very good job in explaining the concept to us. I can't be more thankful to her for what she did. In our last meeting we are able to finalize the assignment after a lot of debugging due to the wrong IC number that is produced in quartus. Which was caused by the wrong placement of our input. We connected the Least Significant Bit (LSB) input to the Most Significant Bit (MSB) leg in decoder, which of course was a fatal error. We also finished the report at that day. And finally, we take a picture to end our meeting.

Conclusion

I really want to say thank you for my group members, for their support, help and cooperation in this project. Also for the fun and understanding that they gave to me during the meeting. Because i am from indonesia and i don't speak malay fluently. Eventhough both language have a lot of similarities. It still hard for me to understand it. But fortunately, we still managed to communicate and understand each other. Regardless of the academic knowledge that i got from this group project, i've developed a few relationship and some softskills (Teamwork and communication) that might contribute in creating myself as an adult in the future. So that i can give something back to the society. Hopefully.
