Principle of Chemical Engineering Process 2

Assalamualaikum everyone especially to Dr Aznizam Abu Bakar and all my friends from section 08. In this second part of principle of chemical process, we had learned two chapter from material balances which are;

1) Balances on Nonreactive Processes

2) Balances on Reactive Process

For the first topic, chapter 8 (balances on nonreactive processes) I need to know:

  • the definition of internal energies (U), entalphy (H), heat capacity, heat of fusion, heat of vaporization that need to be applied in the calculation involving nonreactive processes.
  • calculate the entalphy changes based on state, and the hypothetical process path ehen there are phase change in the process.
  • give the suitable reference state based on the problem so that the calculatio  will be more easier.
  • construct the inlet-outlet enthalpy table to fin out the value of enthalpy and mass or mol.
  • find heat based on the change of enthalpy.
  • for some cases, we need to calculate the enthalpy by using integration method if the value of the enthalpy is not given in the table.
  • adiabatic system which there is no heat (Q) is produce.
  • using the psychometric chart to find dry bulb temperature, wet bulb temperature, absolute humidity, humid volume, enthalpy and enthalpy deviation.
  • refer table B1 to B9 to find the value of enthalpy for example.

For chapter 9(Balances on reactive process) I learned that:

  • find out the reaction wether it is exothermic (release heat) or endothermic (absorb).
  • calculate the heat of reaction base on two method which are Hess's Law, heat of formation and heat of combustion.
  • calculate Q by using two method, heat of reaction and heat of formation (prefer one.
  • both heating value which are higher heating value and lower heating value by using table or formula.
  • all the basic step in chapter 8 also applied in this chapter.

After finished both topic on chemical process, we move to the thermodynamic topic. In this semester, we learned the Second Law of Thermodynamics, Entropy and also Refrigeration cycles.

For the Second Law of Thermodynamics,  I learned:

  • the high temperature reservoir, reversible process, irreversible process, heat engines, refrigerators, and heat pump.
  • Carnot cycle (reversible) which is the perfect system but it is impossible to practic in real life.
  • examine the Carnot principle for the heat engine, heat pump and also refrigerator.
  • detemine wether the system is possible or impossible based on Carnot (reversible) and irreversible one.
  • differentiate which are more suitable and perfect by calculating efficiencies for the system by using normal method and Carnot cycle method.
The second chapter of thermodynamic is entropy. based on this chapter I learned that;
  • the second law of thermidynamics is applied in this topic.
  • define what is the entropy.
  • the entropy changes during the process for pure substances, incompressible substances, solid, liquid and also ideal gases.
  • apply the formula for the solid, liquids and ideal gase to find the entropy changes.
  • the isentropic process which are adiabatic and reversible process.
  • sketch the T-S diagram base on the temperature, entropy, pressure and volume for the water, steam or refrigerant 134a.
  • the general entropy balance equation.
  • relation of the state of the process such as adiabatic, isentropic, closed, steady flow with the entropy generation in the system,
  • develop the isentropic efficiencies and sketch the process in T-S diagram.
Based on the overall lecture, i get that the Thermodynamics topics are more difficult than the chemical process. We need to really understand the situation of the problem given, especially entropy topic which the most difficult chapter for me. But, I will try my best to tackle the question and try to understand all the problem given.
Lastly, thanks to Dr Aznizam because you have to bother yourself to deliver the knowledge to us. I was very grateful that I can learn from you in this course. Once again, thanks to Dr aznizan for all the knowledge and also my section member for the cooperation in class. Hope we can see again Dr and pray for us to pass in final exam especially for this subject. Amin.

Zikri, I always make a joke, Chai and you..sorry for that joke and the style of teaching as well.

Anyway thank you for your  reflection journal, and hope you will get a good grade for this subject...,insyaallah. and aminn..
