Executive Summary

On 17 April 2018, a talk with title ‘BEM Code of Professional Conduct’ was given by Ir. Juraimi Masood from PTP Gelang Patah. He is now a Project Integration General Manager in PTP. He has shared many of his experience as an engineer along his career path. During his position as a resident engineer in heavy engineering, he has explained his job scope to design the project plan and project cost. Besides that, he also had to deal with clients, colleague and contactor so that to build a good network and relationship along his career path.

              Apart from that, Ir. Juraimi Masood had explained what an engineer should do in real working environment. According to him, an engineer needed to manage stake holders’ expectations. Other than that, an engineer also had to manage the development plan, develop the master plan, determine end user requirements, and maintain high quality and safety product. Besides that, a good engineer should good in engaging with consultants, engaging with contactors, suppliers, communities and also authorities.  After that, Ir. Juraimi also showed us and made a clear explanation on what are the employers’ expectation to the young engineer nowadays. Generally, these expectations are below the average and the employers are not satisfied with the performance of the engineers. Therefore, Ir. Juraimi hoped that the engineers should be more hardworking.

              When com to the topic of engineer ethical and moral, Ir. Juraimi has showed that the engineers should follow the standard and guidance from National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). As stated in the code of ethics in IEEE, the engineers need to accept the responsibility in making decisions consistent with the safety, health and welfare of the public. The engineers also should avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest whenever possible and to be honest and realistic in stating claims or estimates based on available data.

              As for the code of ethics stated in NSPE, the engineers should hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of public, perform services only in areas of their competence and issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner. Besides that, the engineers should follow the act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees and avoid deceptive acts. Finally, Ir. Juraimi also concluded that engineering ethics is the field of applied ethics and system of moral principles that apply to the practice of engineering.
