My Reflections
RSS
In the beginning of the course, I have been exposed with various forms of data. The data represented by the different types of variables are derived from different sources including in our daily lives or industrial activities. With the help from Dr. Sharin as our lecturer, I managed to explore some methods of parameter estimation from different distributions. Further data analysis is conducted by introducing the hypothesis testing. It was quite confusing at first but everything went clearly with the exercises and discussions Dr. Sharin conduct during class session.
At the end of course we were asked to do a project which need us to apply some statistical models in analyzing data using R Studio software. As my group which consist of 4 people has decided to analyze a list of countries data, we chose to do hypothesis one sample test, correlation test, regression test and ANOVA test. As in my part, I did ANOVA test to test the equality of growth population means by analyzing the sample variances. Honestly, I went through ups and downs in applying this statistical model that I learnt into the R software but with the help from YouTube, cookbook and guidance from Dr. Sharin herself, I managed to do the test successfully.
Through this project, I got to examine the relationships between the variables population, as well as the relation between the samples. I learned so many practical ways from choosing the dataset, doing several analyses, and making conclusion based on our findings. I also learned on how to utilize the R Studio for the analyses which contributes to the plots and graphs, as well as the statistics used for the analyses.
Along the journey of being a UTM's students on this first semester is not easy for me to adapt as we started our registration and end the semester through online medium. I haven't got any chance to meet my classmates and lecturers face-to-face, we did all discussions and lectures by using WhatsApp, Google Meet and Webex. We faced a number of problems which include unstable internet connection and miscommunication among us. But that were the obstacles for us to face and continue the learning session as usual. By the help of other classmates and lecturers, I managed to complete all the tasks and assessments given by the allocated time.
I've got to learn many things regarding computer science in the courses I enrolled to which are Discrete Structure, Digital Logic and Programming Technique. These courses taught me a lot of things I can apply to in this real-world of technological era. I also enrolled in elective courses which are Graduate Success Attribute, Appreciation of Ethics and Civilizations, and Philosophy and Current Issues. Through these courses I've got to improve and polish both my soft and hard skills which very important for myself to be prepared to face the working environment. I also got to analyze the importance of ethics and relate current issues that occurred nowadays with philosophy. Although I did not study in depth, but I realized that the importance of preserving ethics and philosophy in ensuring the well-being of society.
In short, there were many things that I've got throughout being a UTM's student for this semester. I believe I can learn more things on the upcoming semesters which I can apply to my life and develop a good personality of a UTM's student.
This Discrete Structure course which I enrolled to this semester is taught by Dr. Razana Alwee. Throughout this semester, I got to learn mathematical structures and properties and relate the use of discrete structures to algorithms in solving problems. I also able to apply finding shortest path using Dijkstra algorithm in real world problems. Dr.Razana always asked us to watch her teaching video and do exercises before her class and discuss it during class. With these method, I managed to get better understanding on each topic. I believe that I have a lot of things to learn more on this course.
The first thing came to my mind when I see Digital Logic in my course list is this is like a physics subject and it will be a lot of electrical parts. After few weeks attending this course, I'm not saying that my first thought is right or wrong. I've got to learn on ICs which is part of most of electrical stuffs, codes, logic circuits, counters and many other things. I realized that this course is a compulsory subject to be taken in our first semester as a student of computer science. My lecturer, Dr. Firoz who is a dedicated lecturer for me always provided us a lot of examples and asked us to do it together with him during the class so that we can understand better on each topic. His teaching method is easy to understand when he always interact with us using the chatroom in Webex platform. All past year questions given by him also helped me a lot on applying what I have learnt in class.
From this course, I've got to learn C++ language which I never had chance to learn before. I only learn Java language back in matriculation and I realized there is not much different on the terms of those two. I know that programming thru online learning is hard to adapt when there is no face to face guidance from lecturer, but my lecturer Dr. Zuraini provided a lot of exercises and examples for us to practice. She also provided all the lecture videos on each chapter on e-learning portal so that we can review anytime we want. My understanding on this course got better when Dr. Zuraini asked us to work any activities she conducted in pair. I could discussed a lot from my partner in order to get the best solutions on the given problems. I also got to see other classmates' answer which some are similar and use another ways of solution, and I learn a lot from them. I hope to learn more things on programming language on the next semester.
