Mini Report

The UTM Engineering Student Virtual Hangout Zone session held on Tuesday, 12th October 2021 focused on an IEM (Institution of Engineering, Malaysia) briefing and the introduction of IEM, aligning with several important graduate attributes, including thinking skills, global citizenship, and scholarship.

  1. Thinking Skills:
    • During the session, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Hayati Abdullah, the Chairman of the Institution of Engineering, provided valuable insights into the management structure of IEM and explained the benefits and opportunities available to engineering students as members. This information encouraged attendees to exercise their thinking skills by critically analyzing the advantages of joining IEM and considering how it aligns with their career aspirations. By exploring the objectives and activities of IEM, the session promoted strategic and analytical thinking, helping students make informed decisions about their professional development.
  2. Global Citizen:
    • As an organization with numerous branches across Malaysia, including IEM UTM and IEM UTHM in Johor, IEM highlights the importance of being a global citizen. The institution promotes advanced science and engineering practices, fostering a global perspective among its members. By engaging in applications, fabrication, and various activities, IEM encourages students to think beyond national boundaries and understand engineering's impact on a global scale. This emphasis on global citizenship aligns with the broader goal of creating engineering professionals who are culturally aware and capable of addressing global challenges.
  3. Scholarship:
    • The session offered students a valuable opportunity to enhance their scholarship by gaining a deeper understanding of IEM and its role in the engineering field. Through the introduction of IEM's objectives, activities, and training opportunities, students were exposed to new knowledge and resources for their academic and professional growth. Becoming a member of IEM opens doors to scholarships and further educational opportunities, enabling students to advance their learning and research endeavors. By participating in the session and exploring membership possibilities, students demonstrated their commitment to scholarship and their willingness to engage in lifelong learning within the engineering discipline.

Overall, the UTM Engineering Student Virtual Hangout Zone session focusing on IEM not only provided insights into the institution but also fostered important graduate attributes such as thinking skills, global citizenship, and scholarship. By encouraging critical thinking, promoting a global perspective, and providing access to educational opportunities, the session equipped engineering students with the necessary tools for their personal and professional development in the field of engineering.
