5R Framework for Reflection
Reporting
On 30 November & 1 December 2018, an event organized by PTUTM, "Moon Cake Festival and Cultural Night 2018" had been held. The aim of this event was to promote and introduced Chinese culture, also to enhance and increased the awareness of importance of Chinese culture among the community. We were hoping that the community will appreciate the essence in Chinese culture and realized about the importance of inheriting it to the next generation.
On that day, the place was full of people. Everybody was mesmerized by the beautiful decorations and mouth-watering food. Their eyeballs were attracted to the exciting performance, especially the magic show and drama. Not only that, the lucky draw had brought the whole event to its climax.
I was a member of Cultural Resource group. During this event, my main task was to watch over the Chinese chess endgame booth and maintained the order at the scene. I were assigned to take care of two Chinese chessboards throughout the event, same for my partner. At the end, we gave our participants a souvenir as a sign of appreciation.
Responding
Due to short of staff, my partner and I had to cooperate with each other to make sure everything run smoothly. I felt that this was a challenge but also a good lesson for me to train my team-working skill. Fortunately, my partner was my best friend ever since secondary school. This is why we were able to work well together and as a result, we managed to minimize mistakes committed on duty.
A scenario that is worth mentioning is that the first day was a rainy day, so we thought that less people were going to show up. However, we were surprised by the huge amount of people that came to this event. I felt thankful to everyone who attended and also, I really appreciate my group leader for guiding us and forgave our mistake.
Relating
This was the first time that I joined this kind of big event. Throughout this event, I had learnt how to organize and plan for a big event from zero and learn to work with people from different backgrounds as a team. In the process of preparation, I realized that similar things have happened when our ‘boss’ tried to cut down the expenses due to insufficient funds. This reminds me when I was preparing an event call ‘Aktiviti Khidmat di Pantai Marina Kuala Kedah’ during form 6 period. Due to limited funds, we only brought 2 pack of garbage bags. As a result, we don’t have enough plastic bags for garbage. Thus, some of us reused the plastic bag and some of us tried to use the coconut leaf to load those rubbish. This was a funny and unforgettable memory.
Apart from that, this event also gave me an opportunity to interact with strangers through the games. This helped me to improve my communication skill and I am confident that this experience will help me in the future in making new friends. The task of maintaining order had given me my very first chance to play the role of “inspector” which I had never done in my high school before. Last but not least, I would like to issue my utmost gratitude to my team and my partner here for giving me more than enough guidance and helps throughout the process. I feel proud that I can attended this event and I felt very enjoyable in these 2 days.
Reasoning
From this event, I realized that I had poor time management since this was my very first time joining big event after entering university. I found it very hard to cope with my assignments and lecture courses while we were in the stage of preparation for this event. It was a stressful process to archive good outcomes in both academic and for this event. I found that if I managed to make a timetable such as my senior, then I will not face this kind of problem. However, it taught me a good lesson on importance to manage my time efficiently and this will be an invaluable experience for me. Really appreciate to be given this chance for joining this event.
Reconstructing
Conclusively, based on the previous reflection stages, I have learned that I need to plan my own time schedule carefully so that I can cover my study and extracurricular activities. I believe that as long as I could manage my times, my study and daily routine will not interrupt due to I join several event. Moreover, I also need to improve my communication skill. In the modern workplace, we need more than technical skill to be successful in our career. Our Ex Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn said that graduates should strive to acquire communication skills as employers sought those who could interact with the public, project a good image of the company and co-operate with colleagues. This illustrates the significance of communication abilities. So to improve my soft skill, participating in social events and communicate often is essential. No one was born great. The only way to success is practice.
