Name of event : ROYAL ENGINEERING FESTIVAL 2020: UTM CATAPULT CHALLENGE

I participated in this Catapult Challenge event because I want to challenge myself to see whether I can apply the theoretical knowledge learnt from university to actual daily life.

In this event, the organizer provided us with a few ice cream stick, a plastic spoon and some rubber bands. Then they asked us to use the materials to create a small catapult which will be used to throw the ping pong ball into the boxes that consisted of different marks and thus we can get the mark. Each group had 3 chances to throw the ping pong ball. In the process, I had to give my full scope to creativity in order to figure out the design of functioning catapult using the limited materials. At the end, my teammate and I were still able to build it. Although we able to get only 1 ping pong ball into the box, I still felt very satisfied to be able to build a catapult from material provided.

I love this challenge because it made me think out of the box. The event gave us a chance to apply our physics knowledge and get us creative juices flowing. It also make me realized that one’s ability is limited. Teamwork is indispensable in most scenarios. When our team was formed at the beginning, due to estrangement and unfamiliarity, we can’t come to the same consensus. This caused us to have some fictions in the process and faced some problems in division of labor. But after a brief introduction about ourselves and after a deep discussion, we completed the challenge after we worked together to build the catapult with bare hands. After this event, I feel that cooperating with strangers is an interesting thing because you never know who you are going to meet, what will happen next and it also help me to improve my soft skill. It also taught me how to tolerate with people especially when we are accomplishing a task together.
