SELF REFLECTION-ADAPTABILITY

Adaptability is the quality of being able to adjust to new condition. Flexibility and versatility is the two concept that consist in adapting. Flexibility is a willingness to adapt. That means to adapt with new condition you should self-prepared and be willingly to face the new situation for positive consequences to yourselves. This is because if you are willingly to adapt and become an adaptable person, it can give a good effect on your academic and social.

Meanwhile, versatility means ability to adapt. This show that how you cope in certain situation in your new condition based on your ability. Ability means that how good your communication skills and other soft skills to adapt and how good you are in handling a new situation.

Based on my learning during lecture, to well-adapt in new situation we should avoid some behavior such as fear, bad habit and rigid thinking. Fear is the most dangerous things that can prevent us from doing and involving in so many things. Fear is the feeling when we afraid of something because we believe that it can cause harm to us. To well-adapt we should be brave enough to face any consequences that coming to us. So that, we can gain a new experience and can be well prepared if the unwanted situation hit us again in the future,

Besides bad habit is the one of the most behavior that should be avoid in order to adapt in the new situation. For example, if someone have a bad habit on waking up late and not being punctual on everything, he or she must be having a difficulty to adapt. The university class schedule mostly start on 8:00 am. In order to adapt, someone who have this kind of bad habit should throw away this habit so that they wont be late to class.

In order to adapt, you should not think that what everyone think is same as what you think. Sometimes, we should listen and accept everyone’s opinion as well. You should be rational that not all of your opinion can be accept by everyone and vice versa.

In order to adapt also, we should make sure other people around us is comfortable with us. We should be humble and avoid competition with others in order to adapt with the new situation and new people. Be approachable so that people will easy and happy to cooperate with you. For example, if you going easy and approachable, people willingly ask you to join the group assignment and can help you if you are lacking on some skills. This may be advantages to you so that you will not left behind others.

Social skills is a very important element in order to adapt and socialize with others. Social skills is an ability to read and understand people thought on social perception (Robert A. Baron and Nyla R. Branscombe, 2012). This include the ability to develop a good first impression, the ability to control our emotion, and the ability to adapt with new environment. We should have all these ability to adapt so that we do not be a lonely person in university. Based on Hawkley, Thisted, Masi and Cacioppo on 2016, loneliness is harmful to our physical and psychological well-being.

In order to adapt, we should tolerance on each other. We should understand people as same as how we want to be understand. Tolerance here also talk about how we can accept other people weakness and won’t underestimate them. This is because, we should know that even ourselves also have a weakness on certain things. So we should be tolerance on each other in every aspects.

Based on journal article “Adaptability, engagement, and academic achievement at university written by Collie, R.J., Holliman, A.J., & Martin, A.J. 2016, adaptability also involve cognitive adjustment. It is how your mind set ready and be brave enough to face the consequences. If our mind is not ready enough to cope and adapt with the situation, we surely cannot cope and handle new situation that happen to us.

One new research found that adaptability has a positive links with academic achievement of students in secondary schools (Martin, Nejad et al.,2012) Adaptability also have a link with negative behavioral engagement. If the person does not well-adapt, the negative behavioral engagement can develop and can cause on his or her GPA; that might cause to be much lower.

From this research, I learned that in order to develop a positive behavioral in university, we must be an adaptable person first. If we can be an adaptable person also, it can give a good consequences on our results

Conclusion

In conclusion, being well-adapt with new situation is the most important part in life. Adapting to something new teach us and expose us about the real world and make us grow mature. Adapting need skills and well mind set on how capable we are to adapt with it. Based on this self-reflection, I know that adaptability is a way to live. In order to live a better life, people should well-adapt.
