 The journey of my internship :)

Company: National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

Time: 8.00 am – 5.00 pm

Date/ Day: 16 July 2018 – Monday

Activities:

• At 8.30 am, I went to Menara NIOSH with Pn Noor Faizlah and Pn Noorshuhada and we opened a booth about our division which is Occupational Health and Safety Management Division (OSHMD).
• We promoted to the trainers that came to NIOSH about our services that we provide to the customers such as OSH Risk Management, Work Improvement Program, Emergency Management, Workplace Audit management, Incident Management, Contractor Management and PPE Management.
• Besides, our division also provide consultation and coaching programs such as OSH Gap Analysis, Safety Audit & Work Improvement and OSH awareness.

• After that, at 2.00 pm, I went to the PS Pipeline company at Dengkil with the Industrial Hygiene Division for a safety briefing before entering the site.
• The safety briefing ended at 4.00 pm and then went back to NIOSH.
• I helped Encik Aszwan Azrul to prepared all the equipment that must be brought along the project were run.
• Equipments that we used :

• I learned from Encik Aszwan Azrul how to calibrate the pump using the bios defender calibrator.

Date/ Day: 17 July 2018 – Tuesday

Activities:

• We went to the PS Pipeline at 3.30am in the morning and reached the place at 4.00 am.
• We set-up all the equipment that need to be used before entering the site.
• The objective of this project is to do a benzene monitoring for the driver of the petrol lorry which are Petronas, Shell and Petron.
• The pump and the tube is installed to the body of the workers for at least 15minutes in order to measure the benzene content in the the workers.

                                                                                      Equipment used

• For the information, we used charcoal as a detector for the benzene. So the charcoal were inserted in the tube that connected with the pump and installed to the petrol lorry driver for 15 minutes.
• This project require 2 sessions which is in the morning and afternoon. We took 6 samples for each sessions for 3 days. 2 samples were from Petronas driver, 2 from Shell driver and the other 2 is from Petron driver.
• Then for each sessions also we took the reading of humidity of the surrounding, the temperature and the air movement. We used humidity meter and anemometer to measure all the parameter required.

• At 7.00am we went back to the NIOSH and at 1.00 pm we went to the PS Pipeline to do the benzene monitoring like the first session.
• We went back to NIOSH at 4.30 pm .

Date/ Day: 18 July 2018 – Wednesday

Activities:

• Doing the project of benzene monitoring at PS Pipeline for the 2 sessions like the previous day.
• Repeat all the things that have been done like the previous day.

Date/ Day: 19 July 2018 – Thursday

Activities:

• Doing the project of benzene monitoring at PS Pipeline for the 2 sessions like the previous day.
• Repeat all the things that have been done like the previous day.
• All the charcoal samples that we took for 3 days were kept in the refrigerator and later to be analyzed using a machine.

Date/ Day: 20 July 2018 – Friday

Activities:

• Compiling the reports for the other 2 companies and submitted to the Manager and General Manager.
• Went to the Quality Management Division (QMD) to do the internal audit with Pn Noorshuhada and Pn Faizilah.
• There are 3 methods of the audit which are interview session, sampling document or review document and site visit.
• For the interview session, we interviewed the staffs there on the basic knowledge of occupational safety and health (OSH).
• As for the sampling document, we reviewed all the documents whether it follow the legal or not
• Lastly for the site visit, we visited each of the places where there is the safety equipment like fire estinguisher, emergency kit, and emergency contact.
