industrial training logbook WEEK 5
week 5
The journey of my internship :)
Company: National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
Time: 8.00 am – 5.00 pm
Date/ Day: 9 July 2018 – Monday
Activities:
- I went to the Finance Department at Menara NIOSH with Pn Noor Faizlah to make the invoice for the Work Improvement in Small Medium Enterprise (WISE) programme.
- Pn Faizlah taught me how to make the invoice for every programmed done.
- Checked all the reports that have to be submitted to the General Manager and Manager to be signed.
Date/ Day: 10 July 2018 – Tuesday
Activities:
- I went to the Industrial Hygiene Laboratory to do a test on the urine of the workers
- This time, we did a different test than before which is do the analysis of the Hippuric Acid and Methyl Hippuric Acid in the urine as the metabolite of Toluene and Xylene.
- We used a different machine to do the analysis which is High Performance Liquid Cromatography (HPLC) :
- The sample handling is different than before. I learned the proper way on how to do a sample handling, instrument handling, how to used the machine and how to calibrate the machine.
- For the information, calibration is used to checks the accuracy of the instrument and it determines the effectiveness of the measurement.
Date/ Day: 11 July 2018 – Wednesday
Activities:
- I went to the lndustrial Hygiene Laboratory to continue the same analysis of Hippuric Acid and Methyl Hippuric Acid in the urine of the workers
- I helped Cik Dayana to key in the data in the system provided.
Date/ Day: 12 July 2018 – Thursday
Activities:
- Encik Hanafi give me a task to study the reports of the Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA) and Noise Exposure Monitoring (NOISE).
- As for the CHRA report, I took a company which is Well Equipped Precision SDN. BHD. to be studied. This company produce the machine components.
- As I studied the reports, there were some findings when they did the assessment. It includes some chemicals containers are scattered on the floor. The action that should be taken is to segregate and dispose unused chemicals so that the working areas are safe and clean.
- Besides, the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the welding includes N95 mask, goggle and cotton glove and thinner paints includes surgical mask, goggle and cotton glove. The action should be taken is that to replace the surgical mask to the organic vapour mask which much more better to use and the cotton glove is replace with chemical resistance glove or nitrile glove.
Date/ Day: 13 July 2018 – Friday
Activities:
- I studied the Noise Exposure Monitoring (NOISE) report for a company in Perak which is TPI Paper Product Industries SDN. BHD.
- This company involves in the manufacturing of a good quality paper core with different size which is made from the recycled paper.
- The noise exposure monitoring is done to measure how much the workers are exposed to the noise that produce by the machine.
- As the area monitoring in the company, the observation found that the machineries from the air compressor produce the noise level up to greater tha 90 dB(A).
- Then, the acessor do a personal monitoring for 2 personnel which were selected based on their job category and with the highest risk personnel. The selected personnel includes Slitting Machine Personnel and Paper Tube Winding Personnel. Both of the personnel shows a result of not exceeded the Permissible Exposure Limit.
- A the recommendation made by the acessor is that the warning sign ofhigh noise level should be posted at the entrance or on the periphery of all well-defined work areas which the workers may be exposed to the noise exposure.
