Mini Report:

On 29th of February, Jawatan Kuasa Mahasiswa (JKM) KTDI has organized a volunteering event to the Taman Negara Johor Tanjung Piai. The objective of this event is to adhere awareness about mangrove forest and its importance to the ecosystem. Mangrove forests are a unique ecosystem generally found along sheltered coasts where they grow abundantly in saline soil and brackish water subject to periodic fresh- and salt-water inundation. Their roots collect the silt and sediment that tides carry in and rivers carry out towards the sea. Thus it is important for us to get to know more about mangrove forest as to preserve the nature.

Firstly, We were asked  to gather at Dataran Resak before we depart. The total volunteers were approximately 60 people, came from various faculties. We had breakfast first and a briefing from the conductor. At 9am, we depart to Taman Negara by bus and arrived at 10.30 am.

As soon as we arrived, we were divided into few groups with an instructor from Taman Negara assigned for each group. Each of us got the chance to plant a mangrove tree helped by the instructor. Then the instructor brought as around the mangrove area and introduced us with tremendous amount of mangroves species. On our way, we also stumbled upon a huge snake. We also had the chance to clean the mangrove area. There were a lot of stuffs made of plastic found, which are really harmful for the ecosystem.

After 2 hours, we finished the mangrove tour and head back to a hall to have our lunch. We had a closing ceremony and the group who collected the most rubbish got awarded.

Self-reflection:

It was an exhausting day as I had to walk for 1.2 KM network of wooden boardwalks. However it was undeniably a good and eye opening experience. I got to learn and know more about the importance of mangrove forest to our ecosystem. They basically sacrifice themselves in order for us to get clean water and better environment on the land.

Another thing i like about this volunteer event is the team-working. In the group we were assigned, despite of not knowing some of them, we actually got along easily. We plant and cleaned the area together and had a really good communication among us.

I hope that KTDI will continue to held such volunteering event every year with a lot more awareness being adhered to student.
