INTRODUCTION

During 1st of October 2018, we have spent hours of time at Centre for Information & Communication Technology (CICT), University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) which located in Block D07. This industrial visit was organised by Technology of Information System subject (TIS) - SCSP1013. A number of first year student from School of Computing of different sections and courses attended in this industrial visit. Before we start explored the CICT, we were asked to be in the hall for a briefing on CICT and attendance checks. We were briefed by Mr. Mohd Zahari bin Zainal Abidin. He is an Assistant Senior Officer of Information Technology in CICT and he is also one of the alumni of UTM.

In the organisation introduction, he explained about vision and mission of CICT. He also recounted history of CICT from year 1985 until now. Others, he gave some information about services provided, organisation structure, management, security, customer management and achievements and future services. After the briefing ended, we were given the opportunity to visit training lab (PPICTP) which situated on Level 3 and Galerium CICT on Level 2. This short visit was led by Mr. Mohd Zahari.

Training Lab (PPICTP) The first visit is training lab (PPICTP) which located on Level 3. PPICTP provide computer, Internet access, printing and etc. It’s convenient for students to do their assignment using computer and Internet. Student may come during weekdays (office hour) and weekend.

Gallerium CICT In gallerium, Mr. Mohd Zahari explained and showed to us about outdated models of hardware such as mainframes, magnetic tapes unit, tape drive system, printer, control unit, rack server and tower server. We can observed that all models are different, complicated and unique from the latest technology. Gallerium also displayed old model of RAM, motherboards, processors, and variety of cables.

Services

As a support unit that offers andivers ICT services for the university, CICT provides various services which facilitates daily work of UTM’s community. One of the services is infrastructure and security that focuses on ID account and access, email for staff and students, UTM hosting, UTM-Ads, ICT security, high performance computing, video conferencing & streaming, Wi-Fi and Virtual Private Network (VPN). Other than that, a quality ICT service provider as CICT also provides Application Development that includes system development, mobile apps such as Bus UTM, UTM Smart & guideme@UTM, multimedia development, web development, Intranet Portal for students outside of UTM and crowd funding. This is important in order to build and manage Administrative, Support, Multimedia, Teaching and Learning Applications to improve the university’s service delivery efficiency and quality. CICT also develop new application (web base and mobile) and maintain the current UTM application base on request by PTJ in term of data requirement. Not only that, CICT also offers software services such as antivirus, Wi-Fi hotspot@utm extension, software license and research software to create a smooth and safe computing environment. Besides, ICT Support is also under CICT services. They proffer a dedicated team responsible for maintaining and supporting all aspects of ICT within UTM. Last but not least, CICT accommodates facilities services such as CICT Galerium and training lab for students.

Figure 1.e shows some of the recognition that has been given to Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT) UTM. CICT has been awarded as 6 STAR rating by the Rating for Higher Education Institution in Malaysia, or better known as SETARA. The fact that, there’s no institution has ever achieve this far is the most exciting part as it makes the university itself special. General, Teaching and Learning, Research and Innovation, and Services is the four main criteria that used to measure the quality of teaching and learning in each University. The 5 and 6 Star SETARA will assurance students to receive high quality education and unique university experiences.

Furthermore, CICT UTM also receive Certificate of Conformance Design Documents where the teams designed a new data centre document. The new data centre documents have fulfilled the Tier-3 Certification, The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) ANSI/TIA-942-A: 2017 Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centres. The designed provides a new Data Centre that able to accommodate the needs of University and ICT where the project is basically from the allocation of ‘Rancangan Malaysia Kesepuluh’(RMK-10).

CICT team has successfully provide the best technical documents which bring them to ‘Sijil Pematuhan Saga’ (Standard Accounting System for Government Agencies) 2017 where delivered by the Accountant General Department of Malaysia on 22 November 2017. UTM is among 59 of 416 agencies that have successfully received the certificate other than USM, UPM, UPNM, UNISZA, UTHM and UPSI. This achievement is used as an inspiration for CICT teams to gain more award and continue providing excellent services to the University.

REFLECTION

First of all, we would like to declare that our dreams and goals are totally different from one another as we all have our own imagination of the future life. But through all those differences, the path of it is all back to where we are now. We were all struggling to survive in the ocean full of knowledge called Universiti Teknologi Malaysia where the path to our dreams are close enough to be reached. Through all those path, our dreams is to become the Gorgeous Ingenious Stunning Professional Data Analyst that make a lot of money and become rich. This is because, “become rich is not a sin in Islam but become poor because of your laziness is the greatest sin you could ever imagine” and we don’t plan to failed in our Muslim’s journey.

What does Data Analyst do? Data Analyst interpret data and analyse data using statistical techniques, develop and implement data analyses and data collection systems that optimize statistical efficiency and quality. Data Analyst also acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain database. Those are the lame fact of data analyst, but what we actually dream is, to make those lame work as the best worth professional data analyst in this huge world. By enjoying this Data Engineer course, we would like to score as much as we can because as we fight for our future, with Allah helps, it will totally be the gorgeous bomb future that we can’t even imagine. We want to work abroad as International money is more expensive than Ringgit Malaysia where by using the advantage of International currency, we can become billionaires or even millionaires in our own country. That’s is our totally huge impossible dreams that we will definitely make it happen.

This visit to CICT has a great impact on us to achieve our goals in the future. First of all, we can figure out the ways in which the data is processed according to the correct procedure. Besides, we have a wide range of interesting info and new knowledge about technology from ancient times until now. For example, we can see the electronic tools used in the past that are very different from nowadays in terms of size and physical design.

Furthermore, through this visit we learned how CICT manage, process and store data and maintain data security in UTM and other institutions. Other than that, we are also given extensive exposure and we find that managing the data centre is very difficult so it will give impact to us to work hard and study hard in this field. With this we can achieve the standards set and qualifications to become data analyst. Through this field, we can also contribute our services to the community to make their daily lives easier, faster and safer. For example, we develop and create new systems and applications to aid the learning, management and teaching purposes. With the existence of the applications, we can improve knowledge and ICT literacy among consumers.

In order to improve our potential in the industry, we have to polish and develop our skills includes technical and soft skills to stand out in the industry. Technology grows faster than people and for us in the computing field we have to stay in pace with current changes. Thus, we must use technology as a locomotion or ways to continue improving ourselves. Nowadays, there are gazillion of applications, software, search engines that will provide and lead us to a helpful solution. Not only that, becoming an innovative and creative human being is important to stay in the track of success as there are too many innovations were created to meet the needs of community. A good critical thinking and complex problem solving are necessary because there are too many competitor to compete in the industry. As a conclusion, we have to prepare ourselves from now on to meet the challenging future.
