INDUSTRY VISIT - NEW ACADEMY LEARNING (NALI) EXHIBITION

INTRODUCTION

The purposes of visiting the NALI Exhibition is to let the students know on the current issues, research and development that has been made in order to improve the method of teaching and learning nowadays. The implement of technology, real-life problems and site visit is crucial in the world of technology nowadays as technology can be found everywhere in our daily lives. Moreover, students and youngster nowadays are more advanced in the technology itself. To be a holistic person, students need to be exposed in such a real-life problems so that we can adapt ourselves, practice, learn and prepare before we really get into the world of work.

PROJECT-ORIENTED PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING (PoPbL)

Project-oriented Problem-based Learning (PoPbL) is the research on method of teaching and learning mainly for Software Engineering Courses (SCSJ) at University Technology Malaysia. Project-oriented Problem-based Learning (PoPbL) was created to ensure the future software engineer is trained within the realistic settings of actual software development projects. The main inspiration for this research is to expose the students in solving replicated real-world case study problems with the purpose to develop the student’s professional skills and technical skills in the project-orientation and teamwork settings. The framework is also designed based on fundamental theories and concepts SDLC, which comprises of requirements engineering, analysis, design, development, testing, deployment and evolution.

TANGIBLE EDUCATIONAL GAME (TEG)

This booth tell us about educational games that is become more effective when the challenge they offer matches the developing abilities of the player continuosly . This promotes the motivation of the player and ensures favorable conditions for learning . To achieve a proper match between the player’s abilities and the challenge offered , it is important to minimize any undesirable challenge caused by the user interface . They also studied the ease-of-use of a tangible interface for an educational game and of a personal computer based on version of the same game . Tangibility of the interface was expected to make the game easier to learn and easier to use than PC version because it is more direct . The results from their experiment , in which the interactions of children with the physical interface and screen-based interface were compared to support this . The result suggest that the tangible version of the game is easier to use than the screen based version and that is causes less unintended load for children.

ENHANCING STUDENTS' INVOLVEMENT AND SUCCESS E-LEARNING THROUGH LEARNING ANALYTICS INTERVENTION

The objective of this research which was conducted by Miss Kew Si Na is to develop Leaning Analytics Intervention embedded in e-learning. Learning analytics describe by Miss Kew is like we collect a lot of data generated by the students for example number of login, number of post or number of clicks. So basically her research from week 1 until week 7 is to find the student that are low in motivation, low in academic achievement, low on cognitive engagement and retention from the data that she got from the students. She analyze the data and use it to enhance the teaching and learning catalyses’ and help them to be more interested in their studies. From the data also she can find out the students learning style and she designed the learning objective preferred by the students and they can click on what they like. From there she can formulate the result to find the learning style of a student’s for instance visual student, active student, reflective student, etc. In week 8, she already have all the data that she needed to categorize a student base on their learning style for instance visual student preferred image, video or graphic based approaches in their leaning. So in the intervention part she add more image and also motivational elements like positive information for instance like good job or continues. So after week 8, the students will use more on intervention part to suite the student style of learning. After about 3 weeks she will evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. In her research, she mentioned that she uses data mining to find the result, data mining is we get pre-existing from the database in order to formulate the result. So basically, her research use the data decision making to get the information in the e-learning and to provide the suitable techniques the best suite the leaning style of a student.

THE BENEFITS OF YOUTUBE IN IMPROVING HAIR STYLING PERFORMANCE AND INTEREST AMONG LEARNING DISABILITY STUDENTS

Next booth is about the benefits of Youtube in improving hair styling performance and interest among learning disability students. The researcher’s name is Hemarani A/P Munisam who studying in social science in UTM. This research is done because the learning disability students are hard to remember something new. In this research, they are using Youtube to help the student to improvise their hair styling performance and their interest towards knowledge. Actually, the hair styling method are one of the syllabus in the special school. So, in this research, the teacher will give the student to watch a selected video from Youtube for learning purpose. This is because the video in Youtube will make them become amaze by the tutorial and make them eager to do the same thing as the one in the video. Before the teacher show the students the video, the teacher will make sure the video are following the guideline of this research. For example, some student can only watch short while the others can watch longer video.

Then, the teacher will give a special case to the student. This method is called Case Base Learning (CBL). After giving the case, the student will discuss among their group members to choose the most suitable hairstyle for the case. The teacher will not guide them. As a result, their IQ are improving. The students who usually hard to communicate can communicate better than before. This method is a challenging because the student will be given two hours to complete their case. So, basically, this research is about the teacher helping the student to learn by creating interest about the thing that the teacher wants to teach to the student. The research is one of the best research in NALI 2018 that should be implemented in the special school in Malaysia as it will help both the teacher and the special student.

REFLECTION

The industry visit to New Academy Learning Innovation (NALI) Exhibition was very helpful for us as a student. The exhibition enable us to know the current developments and research that was organised in order to let us students learn much more better in a good environment and more meaningful studies. The development is also very useful for students to gain more knowledge and real-life experiences which will help a lot in the development of skills and critical thinking of students in settling problems. By visiting the NALI Exhibition, we gained a lot of knowledge and motivations for us to study real hard and more passion.
