Reflection of Internship at Cycle & Carriage

In the first week of industrial training I was guided by technical supervisor about the workflow process in the industry and introduce to team leader. Team leader teach how to use equipment around the workshop. The process of workflow is first customer arrive to the service center and talk to service advisor. Then service advisor print out a job cart which content complaint and service job. Then the job cart is passed to technician. Technician take the car into service bay perform service and complaint job according to the job car. After complete the job, the car is send to final inspection to maintain the service quality and finally send to car wash. This is the flow process of a workshop. The rest of eleven week i was assign to perform service job of all types of model car and program control unit software of vehicle system. Beside i also assist technician to perform complaint job such as overhaul transmission, change flywheel, replace airmatic suspension, replace aircond condenser and evaporator. Besides, i also did service for commercial vehicle such as truck and bus.

Normally these are the maintenance carried out in service department.

  • Change the engine oil
  • Replace the oil filter
  • Replace the air filter
  • Replace the fuel filter
  • Replace the cabin or a/c filter
  • Replace the spark plugs
  • Check level and refill brake fluid/clutch fluid
  • Check Brake Pads/Liners, Brake Discs/Drums, and replace if worn out.
  • Check level and refill power steering fluid
  • Check level and refill Automatic/Manual Transmission Fluid
  • Grease and lubricate components
  • Inspect and replace the timing beltor timing chain if needed
  • Check condition of the tires
  • Check for proper operation of all lights, wipers etc.
  • Check for any Error codes in the ECU and take corrective action.
  • Use scan tool read trouble code.

Features of Workshop

  • Equipped with hi tech lift machined for lifting the car to repair top bottom parts

  • All the technicians have their own equipment’s and machinery

  • They have a very large floor area for working their

  • Time to time sweepers clean the workshop to maintain the good working environment

  • All the major & minor faults would be find by manually or through software (Xentry)

In general these are the training that I followed during my internship:

  • Identify mechanical problems, often by using computerized diagnostic equipment
  • Test parts and systems to ensure that they are working properly
  • Follow checklists to ensure that all critical parts are examined
  • Perform basic care and maintenance, including changing oil, giving tuneups, checking fluid levels, and rotating tires
  • Repair or replace worn parts, such as brake pads and wheel bearings
  • Disassemble and reassemble parts
  • Use testing equipment to ensure that repairs and maintenance are effective
  • Explain to clients their automotive problems and the repairs done on their vehicles

There are also technicians still work on traditional mechanical components, such as engines, transmissions, and drive belts. However, since growing number of electronic systems in cars makes our work more easy and fast to identify a problem and diagnosis. Braking, transmission, and steering systems, for example, are controlled primarily by computers and electronic components.

For the complaint job I was get opportunity to use many different tools, including computerized diagnostic tools and power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding torches, and jacks and hoists. These tools usually are owned by their employers.

Service technicians also use many common handtools, such as sockets and ratchets, wrenches, and pliers. These tools generally are owned by service technicians but since I am an internship student, I borrow their tools. Service technicians sometimes specialize in a particular type of repair that may be subject to specific regulations or procedures. For instance, those focused on repairing air-conditioning system must follow federal and state regulations governing the handling, recycling, and disposal of refrigerants. This kind of work I just assist technician and help them to install or remove parts.

These are the work that I assist Technician :

Automotive air-conditioning repairers install and repair air conditioners and parts, such as compressors, condensers, and controls.

Transmission and rebuilders work on gear trains, couplings, hydraulic pumps, and other parts of transmissions. Extensive knowledge of computer controls, the ability to diagnose electrical and hydraulic problems, and other specialized skills are needed to work on these complex components.

Drivability. Use their extensive knowledge of engine management, emission, fuel, electrical, and ignition systems to diagnose issues that prevent engines from performing efficiently. They often use the onboard diagnostic system of a car and electronic testing equipment such as a multimeter to find where the malfunction may be.

Experience that I gained from this internship are the following:

  • New and improved skills and how to apply them

One of the most important things that I gain from an internship is new found knowledge. This can include knowing how to fulfil tasks that given to me and sharpening the skills that I already possess.

  • Professional communications

Working in a professional setting for the first time can be difficult to get used to. But this is the best platform to me to learn how to navigate the working world through real-life, hands-on experience.

One of the most valuable skills that I gain from an internship is the ability to speak with people in a professional setting. Discussions with Technician or Supervisor are different from discussions with lecturers or fellow students.

After my internship, I have a better idea of the appropriate way to behave as a professional. This really help me a lot to be more confident and more matured.

  • Networking

During these internship period I was able to make more networking with different kind of people with different knowledge. These people are very much helpful to me and provide me a lot of information regarding these Mercedes Benz. Besides, I also get an opportunity to meet with Chairman of Mercedes Benz Malaysia (MBM) during his visit in Johor Bahru workshop.

  • Taking constructive criticism well

Naturally, no one likes to be criticised and performance evaluations can be quite scary. As a normal human being I also did a few mistakes and receive constructive criticism about my work from both technician and supervisor.

This always remind me that it’s not personal. It is for my own good and growth and it will improved my quality of working start from day one until last day.

  • Work hard no matter what I amdoing

I always work hard even if my task is small. It really help me to build a good work ethic.
